世界中を縦横無尽に旅したブルース・チャトウィンの代表作。

読むにあたって専門知識は必要ない。読み進めるうちに荒涼とした乾燥地帯としか思っていなかった中央オーストラリアに、目に見えない無数の道・ソングラインの姿がうっすらと、そしてだんだんと具体的に浮かび上がってくる。

「先祖の足跡」と呼んで伝承してきた歌の記憶をたよりに進むことで必ず目的地にたどりつけるという、アボリジニ独特の文化。

本来の簡素さに立ち返るのは、現代の文明から遅れているのではないと示し、ソングラインは世の中で機能しているあらゆる機構の原型であると説く。


現実と虚構の狭間をうつろうような本文に流れる空気は、見知らぬ世界観への戸惑いと相まって、目に見えている実像よりも世界はもっと広く深いということにめまいを覚させる。

世界中のあらゆる時代の旅、放浪について考察された多々のエピソードが、現代の読者も多かれ少なかれ抱いている旅への衝動と共鳴し、広い視野へいざなうきっかけとなるだろう。

「歩きつづけること」の意義を後世に語りづぐ名著。

だんだん年をとると放浪できなくなる。（年をとらなくても放浪癖はあまり周りに喜ばれませんが。。）

でも心の中には自分の知らない何かを求めていきたい性（さが）を誰しも持っている。


という前提で書かれた本です。


確かに持っているけれど、それは人によって大きさが違う。

その一番極端な例がソングラインを知りたいチャトウィン氏。

正直読後感はすっきりはしない。

目にはみえない道がある。アボリジニの人々はその道で出会ったあらゆるものの名前を歌いながら交流し、世界を創りあげたのである。

文章で伝わってきます、その神秘性は。

想像しようと思います、その神秘性を。

でもアボリジニの人々にしかその恍惚感はないのだろうなと。

でもそれに近づこうという姿勢が、動こうとする姿勢が、変化していこうという姿勢が、旅をしようという姿勢が、問われているんだろうなと。

を人生と作品において追求し続けたチャトウィンの大作。
人生において無性に旅をしたくなった時に読む本。
旅に惹かれる人にとっては必読の書だと思う。

ちなみに、絶版になっていた本書を新訳で世に問うた英治出版には心から敬意を表する。
訳は読みやすいし、本のつくりが良い。
特に、チャトウィンのノート引用部分の体裁を変え、「ノート」の雰囲気を醸し出した体裁は素晴らしい。編集者にも拍手を送りたい。
