無学文盲の出口なおは、極貧生活の中である日突然神がかりをし、激しい神の言葉を「筆先」という形で民衆に伝え始めることになる。大本教の誕生である。なおが生きたのは、幕藩体制の動揺・解体から明治維新をへて、日本の近代社会が成立し、さらにいったん確立した体制の動揺と矛盾が誰の目にも明らかになった時代である。しかし、天皇制国家による国民意識の統合が、「文明開化」や「富国強兵」などの驚異的ともいえる達成を成し遂げていた、そのような時期になおが終末観を抱き続けたことは、驚くべきことである。
