児童文学評論、翻訳者である筆者の自伝。
朝鮮で生まれ、
敗戦後日本に引き揚げるまでの苦労から、
大人になるまでの、
まさに、彼女自身のことが、
彼女自身の言葉で描かれている。

彼女独特の目線は、
幼いころから備わっており、
時折大人以上に、
オトナなものの見方、考え方をする少女の姿がある。
そして、それらを突き動かしていたのは、
まさに知的好奇心であり、
未知のものへのあこがれ出会った。
生きるということ、
前に進むということを、
肩肘張って意識することなく、
しっかりと時代や社会を見据えて歩いている姿が見えてくる。

その当時の社会情勢なども踏まえて書かれていることが、
より身近な思いで読み進めることができ、
昔の生活を知ることもできる自伝。

よく著者が言っている、
「ひとつの時代を知るために山のような記録を積み重ねるよりも、ひとつの良くできた物語を読むほうがずっとよくわかる」を地でいっている作品だなぁ、という感想を持ちました。
大陸からの引き上げと、戦後の没落がどういうものだったのか、歴史の事実の積み重ねだけではこぼれ落ちていたものをこの本によって知ることが出来ました。
それにしても皆投げ出さず、必死になって働いていたんだなぁ、と思う一方、どうして投げ出さずにいられたのか、その点が不思議でした。
著者はよく、「一日のうち（一週間のうちだっけ？）ほんの少しでも生きてて良かった、と思える時間があれば生きていける」と言っていますが、この本を読んでいると本当に「ほんの」一瞬だったんじゃないのかしら、と思いました。自分と引き比べて、あぁなんて自分は恵まれて育ったんだろう、と思う瞬間でした。
もちろん、もっと優れた戦後の物語はあるのかもしれません。それでも、今の言葉で、今の時代に向けてこういう本を描いて下さったことに感謝しています。

幼児期、ほとんど記憶のかなたからの引き揚げの思い出からはじまり、戦後の農村で 貧しく また生き生きと育った筆者の青春時代の記録。
舞台と世代が やや似通っていることもあるのだろうか、引き込まれて一気に読んだ。
人名などを「Ｋさん」のように表記している理由が分からないし、時にはるか離れたエピソードに話題がつながる所があって ちょっととまどったが、これも含めて 著者の 青春が終わるまでの日々が 一つの世界を作っている。
