遊牧民の少女ナンサはきょうもモンゴルの大地で暮らす。馬を駆ってヒツジを追い、小さな妹弟と草のうえで転げまわり、両親から草原で生きる智恵を学ぶ。同名映画のノベライズ的なもの、として読みはじめると嬉しい誤算に気づく。監督自身による遊牧民、あるいはモンゴルの文物についてのエッセーが思いのほか良質で、映画を追体験するにも、モンゴルという国を知るのにも役立ってくれる。草原に映える色鮮やかな民族衣装、「屠る」という神聖な儀式、年々遊牧民が減少している現状……。どれもが初めて知ることばかりなのに、そうは感じさせないやさしい語り口の裏には、母国の文化に対する誇りとその継承者たちへの敬意が見てとれる。もちろんナンサもそのひとりだ。幼いながらすでに文化の担い手である。少女には重すぎるだろうか。しかし、彼女が拾ってきたイヌに見せるやさしさと、家族のあたたかなやりとりを見ていると、余計な心配なのだろうと思えてくるのだ。
