安価なミドリガメ（アカミミガメ）、ゼニガメ（クサガメ）、スッポンの幼体などを
飼ったのはいいけど成長したらかなり大きくなり持て余してしまった･･･なんて
人は結構いるのでは？（捨てられたアカミミガメが生態系破壊の原因になっているのは有名）

これらの種は一部を除いて成体でもそれほど大きくないですし、
価格も爬虫類としては安価（上記の種よりは高価ですが）なので
カメを飼うならこれらの種も検討の余地は十分にあります。
（気が荒い種類が多く、喧嘩し易いのが欠点ですが）
それらの種を専門に書いている書籍です。
中でも安価かつ入手が比較的容易でこの仲間の入門種と言える
ミシシッピニオイガメに多くのページが割かれているのも良し。

ちなみに私もミシシッピニオイとカブトニオイ（ワニガメよりこっちがガメラっぽい）
を飼っていますがいいカメですよ。
