増補改訂版では、９０年代から殺人容疑に関する審決までが追加されています。
日本語で読んで、改めて悲惨な内容に暗い気持ちになりました。

増補前の本も、結末は悲惨なものでしたが、スペクターの活動再開を否定してはいませんでした。
著者が、「狂気ゆえに実現された音楽」という一貫した考えにより、それまでの彼の狂気を創作のリスクとしてある程度許容していたからでしょう。

今回の増補版を通じて、著者はスペクターを突き放しています。
殺人容疑までのスペクターの状況を、創作のリスクを越えたものとして、キツイ記述で断罪しています。
著者は、相棒のラリー・レヴィンの「もう二度とがんばらなくてもよくなったから、彼はホッとしているのかもしれない」という言葉を借りて、もはやスペクターに新たな創作の機会は与えられない、という考えを表明しているようです。

この本の収穫は、セリーヌ・ディオンとのセッションの記述と、朝妻一郎・大瀧詠一両氏の対談だと思います。
特に後者は、スペクターを軸としつつ当時の音楽状況を広く語りあう内容となっており、スペクター体験の有無に関わらず、ポップスに関心を持つ人には得るものが大きいと思います。

２００７年に出版されたスペクター関係の本に"TEARING DOWN THE WALL OF SOUND"というのがあります。この中に、1947年当時の、おめかしをしたスペクター家四人の写真が載っています。
自殺したお父さんは、とても優しそうな方にみえました。

フィル・スペクターへの入り口はいろいろある。
私の場合ビートルズ『LET IT BE』のプロデューサーとして。ネイキッド関連の本を読んで改めて、スペクターが何をしたのかということがはっきりと分かりより興味を深めた。
ビーチ・ボーイズのブライアン・ウィルソンからも、大滝詠一からも多分にその影響を感じた。
興味はあるがいまひとつ情報が少ない人物であったが、この一冊に知りたい情報はほとんど入っていた。
やはりスペクター、伝説である。
ビートルズとの絡みがなによりそそられたが、前半ののし上がっていくまでの話がすごい。なによりその音楽的センスがすごい。ジョン・レノンと同じ年というのもすごい。
この本を読み終え、早速以前購入したCD BOX SETをとりだし聞き直した。ある程度聴きたおしたと思っていたが、まったく新鮮に思えた。続いて、映画『EASY RIDER』を見直す。おっいたいた！
ジョージ・ハリソンの『ALL THINGS MUST PASS』を購入、などなど。後をひく良い本だった。おすすめです！
