冠詞の意味や、存在意義について、整理したい人にお勧めの本。
絵や図などによる説明に依拠しすぎているきらいはあるが、
これを読めば一通りの英語的感覚は理解することが出来るはずだ。
だがあくまで一般読者向けにかかれたものであるようなので、
これをステップに、より学術的な冠詞研究へと入り込んでいくことが、
深い理解には肝要であるにちがいない。

　高校時代の英語授業で「固有名詞は、川の場合にはthe Thaimsのようにtheをつけなければならないが、駅の場合はVictoria Stationという具合にtheは必要ない」と習ったものです。しかし当時の先生は、その理由までは説明してくれませんでした。以来四半世紀以上に渡って私はひたすら、「川にはtheをつけるが、駅にはtheをつけない」と呪文のように繰り返しては、英語を話したり書いたりしてきました。

　なぜ川の名前には定冠詞がつき、駅の名前には定冠詞がつかないのか。長年に渡る私の疑問の答が、なんと、本書には書かれているのです。これまで様々な英語学習書をあたってきましたが、それでも解けなかった長年の疑問が一気に氷解しました。

　本書によると英語では「境界がはっきりしていないものに定冠詞をつける」という原則があるというのです。川はどこから始まっているかがはっきりしない存在なので定冠詞が必要。一方、駅のように地図上では「点」のような存在で、境界線をひくことができない（＝境界線をひくような対象ではそもそもない）ので、定冠詞は不要だというのです。

　この原則に常に立ちかえれば、「橋」や「街路」のようにどこからどこまでかがはっきりしているものは無冠詞（London Bridge、Madison Avenue）、「砂漠」や「山脈」のようにどこから始まってどこで終わるか明確ではないものには定冠詞をつける（The Sahara、The Himalayas）というわけです。

　本書はもちろんこれ以外にも定冠詞・不定冠詞・無冠詞の用法について300頁にわたって様々な解説を加えています。その解説すべてに対して、上記のように膝を打つことがあるわけではないのですが、それでもなかなか食いでのある一冊だというのは偽らざる感想です。
