シドニィ・シェルダンの新刊が出るとどうも脊髄反射的に読んでしまうが、明らかにかつての「ゲームの達人」「真夜中は別の顔」などの頃と比べて質が落ちており、このような劣等品の大量生産に走っているのは寂しい事態である。この小説は、異常気象を発生させることができる技術開発を巡って、世界中で科学者たちの不審死が発生し、そのすべてにある研究所が関わっていることが明らかとなり、その謎を美女二人が解き明かしていくというストーリー。展開が早いのはいつものシドニィ・シェルダンのとおりなのだが、ディテールが犠牲にされすぎてしまっており、全体として粗い作品になってしまっている。大きな期待を持って読むと損をするが、暇つぶし程度にはよいかもしれない。

一流モデルが熱烈なファンに恋に落ちる→ありえる訳もないような説得力のない展開
雇われた殺し屋→思った以上に間抜け
殺し屋から逃れようとする二人の主人公→命を狙われている割にはのんき
アメリカ、ヨーロッパとどんどん場所が変わっていくが、場所が変わる意味がほとんどない
金がない割には随分流暢に旅している。とても殺し屋から狙われながら秘密を突き止めようと
している切迫感、どきどき感が伝わって来ない。
最後にどんな謎が隠されているのか？それだけが気になって、そのネタがわかった時！
私は「なーんだ」と失望した
ご都合主義もいいところ
こんな文句を言いながらも、読みすすめてしまった
こういう展開のテクニックはシドニィシェルダンはさすがにうまい。
シェルダンのファンが暇つぶしに読むといいです。
けど、満足度は０です。

世界中のあちこちで同時多発的に事故死する科学者たち。極貧の中からスターの座を勝ち取る美女。美女を射留める醜悪な小男。渦巻く金欲と権力欲。シドニィ・シェルダンが久々に放つ現代の黙示録。巨悪に立ち向かう女性二人組の運命は?全ページがクライマックス読み始めたら止まらない!天才作家久々の長編大作。

確かに読み始めるとそれなりに面白く止まりません。
昔の作品と比較してしまうのは、酷な事かもしれませんが、やはりマンネリ感がありますし、先が読めてしまう作品も多くなったように思います。

１月３１日　お亡くなりになりました。合掌。
