1945年7月13日疎開先長野で生まれる。東京武蔵野で育ち、学習院中・高等科から大学へ行き中退。1968年渡米、カリフォルニア州立大学ロングビーチ校公園管理学部卒業。1973年ハワイへ移住。以後30年間ハワイに暮らし映像、写真、音楽、アートの分野で活躍。現在はビッグアイランド、ヒロに住みホノカアにバンブーギャラリーとB & Bを経営。サウスシーへのコンタクトを続け、地球環境・リサイクル問題に取り組み、太平洋から世界へメッセージを送り続けている(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

ニュージーランドに憧れて一度行ったことがある私ですが、この本はまるで写真集のような綺麗な風景が載っていて自分の中のイメージをまたさらに大きく膨らませてくれるような日記でもあります。
写真に添えてある一言も味があってとても深く心にしみます。
行ってみたい人や思い出に見たい人にはオススメの一冊です。

最初の僅かなページ数しかクック諸島は掲載してません。
つまらなかった。
写真ももの足りない。
クック諸島を観たい人には、勧められないです。
美しさというより、ガッカリ感に溜め息が出ました。
（ニュージーランドを観たい人には、いいんじゃないかと思いますが・・）

クック諸島を知らずニュージーランドを知らない人がはじめて見ても、あらゆるページでデジャ＝ヴュを感じるにちがいない写真集＝旅日記です。うらやましい行程で、たぶん旅する本人には最高の体験だったはず。でも写真はどれも妙に空っぽで、もらっても困るだけの航空会社のカレンダー写真みたいだし、文章はときとしてためいきが出るほど空疎。「ここの料理も雰囲気も最高で、今まで食べた何処のレストランよりも素晴らしかった。満月の贈り物は毎月ちゃんとこうして僕の前に登場してくれる。満月の光で浮かび上がる森の中で満足な一日が終わった。」文章を読むこちらには、とてもうかがいしれない境地です。立ち読みもせずいきなり買ったときの興味の中心だった「クック諸島」のパートが、完全にハワイ諸島からアオテアロアへの通過地点にすぎなくて、かなりがっかり。こういう分野の産業があるんだなあとは思いますが、「旅」と「写真」と「文学」に共通する唯一の美徳、「発見」のよろこびだけは、この本にはありませんでした。それなりに美しい本なので、それをよろこぶ人もいるでしょうけれど。
