1962年、茨城県生まれ。本名読み・あつし。1987年、東京大学文学部英文学卒。1997年、同大学院比較文学比較文化博士課程修了、学術博士。1994~99年、大阪大学言語文化部講師・助教授、国際日本文化研究センター客員助教授などを経て文筆業。著書に『聖母のいない国』(河出文庫、サントリー学藝賞受賞)など(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

表題作の中編は、「樋口一葉が長生きして無名の作家として死んだ」パラレル・ワールドの８０年代を舞台に、一葉（この作品では結婚後の「山室なつ子」という名前）を修士論文の題材に選んだ、女子大の大学院に属する女の子を主人公としている。
一葉（及び、当時彼女を称揚した者たち）についての神話崩しが行われているのはもちろんだが。
その他にも文学研究の方法論や文学研究者たちの生態に関する裏話や、著者独自の文学作品についての見解、著者とほぼ同年齢に設定されている主人公の思春期からの読書遍歴描写などが盛り込まれていて、様々な面で楽しめる。

もう一作の短編「純文学の祭り」は未来の芥川賞（作中では豊島賞）選考会が舞台のパロディ作品。
登場または言及される人物たちは、現在２０代〜５０代の高名な純文学作家・評論家たちが年をとり中年・老年化したという設定。ちなみに、選考委員長は浦上龍（＝村上龍）。
すべての登場人物が名前を変えられているが、「少し変えた」程度なのでほとんどが誰がモデルかがわかる。私は人物対応表を作ってみたが、唯一、作中での「宝井小枝子」という作家だけが、誰を指しているのかわからなかった。
著者の皮肉たっぷりの悪ノリぶりに、ニヤニヤしっぱなしの一編である。なかでも、大岡昇平の小説「萌野」で描かれた人物が登場するのには、爆笑であった。

こういうコミック・ノベルの傾向の作品は、また書いていただきたい。

こんなに面白い小説が話題にならないなんてどうかしてる！
併録されている短編も含め、大傑作でしょう。

文学少女話は楽しいなあ。ついでに作者のブログを読んでしまったら、ちょっと艶消しで失敗だった。でもRSSリーダーに登録したけどね。
