旧ルパンの物語世界を「解釈・分析」した評論的な本ですので、
評論が嫌いな人、資料のみを求める人にはおすすめできません。

イキであるべきルパンの世界を語るには文体がおたくクサイのが気になりますが、
洞察はとても深くて、個人的には名著だと思っています。
「そうそう！　わかってるなー」と共感したり、
「へえー、そんな見方もできるのか」と感心したり、
「ええー？　それは裏読みしすぎでしょう」と苦笑したり、
旧ルパンを物語論的に考察したいファンなら面白く読める本だと思います。
ただし、文学的アプローチによる物語解釈が中心になっていますので、
視覚芸術であるアニメ評論としては不十分かもしれませんが。

なお、著者は宮崎・高畑ルパンを優れたアニメ作品として賞賛はしていますが、
著者が真のルパンとして愛しているのは大隅ルパンだけです。
それは後にキネ旬別冊での著者による大隅（現・おおすみ）氏インタビューで
告白されていることでもありますが、
本書を読んだだけでもその愛情は十分に読みとれると思います。

幻のストーリー設定やオリジナル台本を知りたいという期待にはまぁまぁ答えてくれます。ただ製作時の裏話、スタッフの苦労話などがもっとあればさらに資料としての価値があったように思えます。

内容は、あまりにも余分な派生や、解説に不自然なこじつけが多すぎます。セックスや当時の社会情勢、深層心理など…..、ルパンといってもたかがアニメで娯楽。大人の目を通し、少しは理屈で語ってみても、結局は単純な結論でルパンを理解するのがファンは好きなのではないでしょうか？その点でバランスが取れてないと思います。

もう一点は、エディターズ・レビューにある「宮崎駿・高畑勲が手がけた~ 」の部分で、著者はこの二人寄りなのだというのは想像できるも、その賞賛が予想以上でした。旧ルファンの中では、初代監督の大隅氏＆作画監督の大塚氏がルパンを作ったという認識が主流です（私もそのうちの一人です）し、カリ城は、ルパンを借りた宮崎氏の表現のひとつという認識で捉えられています。

確かにルパンが新テレビシリーズを通して今日のようにメジャーになったのに宮崎&高畑氏の功績を無視することはできませんが、ルパンがアニメという枠を超えて評価される理由は、やはり大隅氏の功績が大きいのです。それを、大隅氏を批判と取れるコメントまであったのにはちょっと...です。
