初代「風雲児たち」からこれまでの、本シリーズの質の高さととりわけ出版運の悪さに、ため息が出る。この著者には、腰を据えて執筆できる安定した場を与えてほしいと心から思う。本書では、時代は1840年代後半へやや遡り、始めのうちこそ手探りのようなもどかしさを感じるが、次第に本来の調子を取り戻していく。歴史の不思議を実体験するような感覚が味わえる名作である。感動できるギャグ漫画は稀少。島津斉彬とジョン万次郎の対話の場面には涙が出た。

吉田寅次郎が桂小五郎に対して言った言葉

「君ッ　どうして　ぼんやりと　私の話を　聞いているのですか

　あなたの時間が　もったいないでは　ないですかッ

　この地球上に　あなたは　一人しか　いなので　あります

　君は　何のために　生まれてきて　そこに　座っているので　ありますかッ

　自分という　ワクに　はめられていては　そこから抜け出せない　のです

　人々のために　生きるのが　自分を生かす道でありますっ

　「公」に　尽くす道を　歩まねばなりませんっ

　そのために　生きるのです　そのために　学ぶのです

　わかりますかッ」

歴史がわかりやすいだけでなく、ギャグにまで進化させたみなもと太郎氏。
そして随所にあるこのような名台詞たち。

このマンガは幕末の小宇宙が詰め込まれている宝箱のようです。

全編通してギャグの連発。しかし、そのギャグは常に歴史上の事実・名台詞を見事に織り込んでいます。読者を飽きさせず、自然に体に染み込むように歴史を教えてくれるという稀有の書であり、およそ歴史書と名のつく書物の中で、これほどまで楽しく、自然に学べるものはないいでしょう。
特にすばらしいのは作者のキャラクター造形。ギャグタッチで軽〜く描かれた風雲児たちの実物ソックリの顔、強烈な個性、悲喜こもごもの人生には、読者をして「こいつらに会いたい！」と思わしめるだけの大きな魅力があります。
私自身日本史は長く学んできましたが、本シリーズを読んで目から鱗が落ちた感じです。エンターテインメントとして、あっという間に、しかもかなり詳しい内容を学べてしまう。その上、歴史上の人物たちに対する強い好奇心と愛着を抱かずにはいられない。
今までの自分の勉強はなんだったんだ、と思ってしまうほどの傑作です。歴史を扱う以上、作者の主観が入っていることは否めませんが、それでもなお、多くの人に読んでもらいたい作品です。
