このマンガを最初に読んだのはちょうど20年前。
私が大学1年生のときだ。
親戚の家にたまたま単行本が置いてあり、
その独特の歴史解釈と、マンガとして逆の面白さに
夢中になって読んだ記憶がある。
特に、腐敗政治の代表格としてネガティブに語られることの多い
田沼意次の功績面にスポットを当てた解釈は私にとっては衝撃だった。
(田沼の登場は、もっと先の巻なので注意)

その後、コミックトムの連載も(本屋の立ち読みで)しばらくは
追い続けたが、いかんせん売れないマンガ月刊誌のこと。
置いてさえいない本屋も多く、いつの間にか追いかけるのを
やめてしまっていた。
このサイトを見ていたら、たまたまこの作品が
出版社を変えて再出版され、全巻手に入ることを発見して、
まずは懐かしの第1巻を入手した次第だ。
復刊したリイド社と、それが簡単に購入できるアマゾンに感謝！

20年前に読んだ作品のはずであるが、いや面白い。
この第1巻の舞台は関が原の戦い。
400年後の明治維新で主役に躍り出る薩摩・長州・土佐の3藩が、
いずれもこの戦いに参加しながら、それぞれの事情で
実に中途半端な結果に終わってしまったことにスポットを当てている。
歴史の学問的な「解釈」としても、実に興味深いのではないか。
と同時に、この先の展開が非常に楽しみだ。


このシリーズが名作であることに疑いはない。
ここから単行本20巻で、ようやく明治維新の入り口に
たどり着くはずであるが、私は少しずつこの20巻を読んでいこうと思う。

~~この作品を初めて読んだのは、もう20年以上前です。
単行本化されるペースがすごく遅く、しかも世間にほとんど知られてないものだから、
あまり売れてるようにも思えず。。。
毎回発売を楽しみにしながらも、いつ販売中止になるか・・と、不安におののく日々でした。

~~
これだけははっきり言えます。
この本は、素晴らしい。
~~
この本で、徳川秀忠を知り、前野良沢を知り、高野長英を知り、平賀源内を知り、
林子平を知り、田沼意次を知り・・・キリがないので、この辺でやめますが。。

~~
「知る」という意味は、単に教科書に載ってるような知識を覚えたという意味ではなく、
それぞれのキャラクターが、自分の頭の中で、泣き、笑い、走っているのです。
~~
この本は学校の副読本に採用されるべきものだと、強く思います。

関ヶ原から、黒船来航まで。
まだまだこれからの展開が楽しみです。

正確な史実に基づいた歴史マンガ。
これを読めば幕末の歴史にくわしくなること間違いなし。
あまり知られていないマンガですが，ぜひ読んでみてください。
