　内容を簡潔に言うと、怪獣もので青春もの、ついでに自衛隊。

　怪獣がいる世界をリアルに描いています。一応SF的な解説があるが、結局怪獣がどうしてそこにあるかについては明確な説明がありません。
怪獣はただそこにいるのであって、作者自体が対談などで述べているように、「怪獣がいる世界」を描いた平成ガメラシリーズの影響が見られます。
読者に「そうか怪獣がいるのか」と思わせる力量は見事だと思います。
　大人と子供の二組の主人公がいるため、職業ものと青春ものを同時に楽しめる点がお得だと思います。
大人がきちんと大人であり、自らのつとめを果たし、子供を導くという点で、非電撃系的な要素が強いといえますし、その点に好感を持ちました。
そのことがハードカバー、挿絵無しという本の形式にあらわれているのではないかと思います。

ラピュタとガメラとプテラノドンが好きだという作者が書いた初のハードカバー本。
高度２万メートルで起こる二度に渡る航空機事故。
その事故で自衛隊のパイロットである父を亡くした少年瞬は、海でクラゲのような生物を拾い、その生物と交流を始める。

面白かったです。
少年と並んで、事故に遭ったときの飛行に同行し、危うく助かった光稀も一方の主人公です。
どちらの思いもとても丁寧に描かれています。
事故の原因を知って、それをぶつけられた『フェイク』の戸惑いが切ないです。

簡単に感想を言うと、前半は盛り上がり、後半は少しダレ、最後はきれいにまとまった。
きっちりページ数の半分くらいで、ピタッと盛り上がらなくなります。それまでページをどんどんめくれていたのですが、そこから少し読むペースが落ちました。つまり、あまり興味深くないと。しかし、そこはじっくり読ませてもらい、最後のきれいな展開にも一味出しています。
前作同様、設定はなかなかいい感じがします。それでもやはり、人物描写は雑かなとも思います。今回はキャラクターの位置はしっかりしていたので、そこはプラスでしょう。
メディアワークスのハードカバーということに、違和感はありませんでした。それにハードカバーで、この厚さでこの値段は意外に安めかもしれません。
僕個人の主観で、前作「塩の街」より非常によくできた作品だと思っています。
