最近多いですよね。万人に媚を売らずに、徹底的に「世界」を追求した写真集が。この写真集
もそうした流れの中から生まれた作品の一つですが、例え読者層を絞りまくった題材であって
も敢えて流通させてみせる姿勢は、出版業が振るわない昨今、面白い試みだと思います。
またそうした個性豊かな作品に対して確実に応えてくれる読者は存在するわけで、大ホーム
ラン狙いばかりでなく、こつこつと読者層を集める目論見は正しい戦略の一つだと思います。

さて本書ですが、なんともしみじみとした光景が胸をうちます。文庫本「秘境駅」シリーズ
からのファンですが、旅行と言えば速達性と到着することばかりが目的となり、寄り道や目的
地までの時間の楽しさが失われつつある昨今の状況は嘆かわしい限りで、通過される存在で
しかなかった小駅に眼を向けた牛山氏の姿勢に共感することしきりです。また、時代の流れが
加速する一方の中、思い出の中の存在と化した「昭和」が今なお健在であることは嬉しいこと
で、鉄道マニアならずともどこか蘇ってくるものを感じないものでしょうか。

「秘境駅」に到達することをスコア化した、一部の鉄道ファンの姿勢にも疑問を感じざるを
得ませんが、願わくば一日でも長く、この写真集に収められた光景が存在し続けてほしいもの
です。この辺の心境は、平成生まれの方には理解しがたいかもしれませんけどね。

wikipediaの「秘境駅」というキーワードから著者の運営するサイト「秘境駅へ行こう！」、
そして文庫版「秘境駅へ行こう」から本書へと一気に辿りつきました。
こういう駅があるんだねー、とひたすら感心。

今、この時間にも列車が殆ど止まらず、殆ど利用する人もいない駅が、
山あいに、崖地に、海べりに、ひっそりと佇んでいることに何とも言えないなロマンを感じます。
粗末な駅舎に心があるように思え、何か語りかけているのではないか、
とさえ思えてくるから不思議です。
時間を超越したワンダーワールド。

文明とは何か、人の営みとは何なのか、という哲学的な命題にも思わず柄にも無く思いを馳せてしまう、
そんな気にさせる写真があなたを呼んでいます。
