こんなに本のこと、本のコンテンツのこと、本を買う人のことを考えるデザイナーはいない。
デザインは感覚的なもの、感覚が優先する仕事だと思い込んでいる人も多い。確かに感性は必要だし、最後にものを言うのはセンスだ。しかしセンスを生かすためには、考えることが必要だ。考えて抜いて工夫をすることが大切だ。

今はDTPになっていることもあり、工程が複層化しているし、一人でフィニッシュできない。製作するには、ふさわしい流れを作り出すコミュニケーションも必要になってくる。そして統合することも。その統合は現場力でなければならない。編集者を「うんそれでよい」と納得させることも、プリンティング・ディレクターにこのラインのシアンを0.5％上げてと言って「うん、そうだね」と共感してもらうこともいる。あっているリアリティがいる。ミルキィ・イソベはそんなすべてを備えているアート・ディレクターだ。

アート・ディレクターは、エディトリアルも行う。意外にもミルキィ流・ブックデザインの大半は、エディトリアルに費やされている。この本は、デザインの本でもあると同時に、エディトリアルの本でもある。実は編集者が読むと最も役に立つ本かもしれない。
