女性翻訳家による、育児と言葉にまつわるエッセー集。

一読して感じるのは、とにかく文がきれいだということです。
例えば、男性に一番受けそうな「靴下問題」の章では、女子高生の頃、男子とセックスするときに、靴下は脱ぐのか、ということが問題になった、と述べています。同年代の男子は、気がはやって、下着を脱がすのに必死で、靴下までは面倒をみてくれない。すると、セックスの間中、靴下のみの姿でいるのか。なんと、みっともない。
・・・という話なのですが、これを、なんとも上品な言葉で書き綴っています。
それでいて、ちゃんと、内容も、おかしみも、伝わってきます。
さすがは、言葉使いの翻訳家です。

ただ、その上品さが災いしてか、いまひとつ物足りないのも確かです。
油ギトギトで下品な焼きそばに慣れてしまった身には、上品なそうめんは物足りない、といったところでしょうか。

自称、上品な教養人には、お勧めかもしれません。

いろいろな言葉にまつわる話が、翻訳家・女性・妊婦・母といういろいろな立場で書かれていて実に面白かった。
特に、娘さんが発する「かぶさん」なるもののくだりがなかなか良かった。
文学作品も多く紹介されているので、興味が広がります。
ただ、前半は自身とことばの話がメインなのに対し、中盤から娘の成長とことばの話がメインになってしまい、最終的にはよくある「子供って素晴らしい、子育てって素敵！」って印象を受け、残念でした。
子育て経験者には、お勧めできます。

「文は人なり」とは限らない。作者と文章は別物だ、というのが現代文学の主流かとは存じますが、この本についていえば、文章と作者の人柄が一致していてほしい。そう思わされてしまう素敵なエッセー集です。
子育てをして発見した言葉への深い洞察を軽妙に書いています。子連れになって他人の見合いに遭遇する機会が増えたこと、家庭で禁句をつくるとどんな不都合が生じるか、「訛り」の大切さ……。テーマだけでもセンスの良さを感じさせませんか。おおらかそうなご主人が折に触れて登場するユーモアある文章を読んでいると、こんな一家に生まれた娘さんはラッキーだなぁ、と思うわけです。
「頭がよくて意地悪」と評されたりする小説家K井氏のように、頭脳明晰な女性文筆家にありがちなイヤミさとは無縁な、好感の持てる読後感です。女性に人気がある『嵐が丘』の翻訳者らしく、男勝りというより女性的な優しさが滲み出ているのかも。「アタマのいい女性たち」からは「文章に性差などない」とお叱りを受けるかもしれませんが。
