”youth”というと、通常は青春時代、もしくは１０代(teenage)のころなどを指すようですが、今回は若干事情が異なるようです。
ここでの”youth”は、両親が亡くなるまでのことを指すのだと考えてみてはいかがでしょう。

この本では、両親との、必ずしも楽しかったとは言い難い思い出の数々が、その他の幼い頃のエピソードとともに綴られ、最後に両親の死と、両親から語り手が受け継いだ（相続した）性格についての叙述が加えられます(本の中ではInheritanceというタイトルの章が設けられています)。
この過程をもってして、「若かった日々」の終わりと考える。
僕はそのように受け取りました。

文体はとても静かで、さっぱりとしていながらも（入り組んだ構文になっていない）、力強さを感じます。
もちろん、英語なので、僕の語学力では細かいニュアンスまでは汲み取れないのですが。

他の作品、"The Gifts of the Body"、や"Excerpts from a Family Medical Dictionary"なども、基本的には”the end of youth”と同系列の物語と考えていいと思います。
"The Gifts of the Body"は、死を間近に控えた人たちの世話をするホームヘルパーの話。
"Excerpts from a Family Medical Dictionary"は、重病を患った母親の身の回りの世話をしながら、息をひきとるまで見守る話。

淡々とした文体が、いたずらに涙を誘うことはありません。
筆者の断固とした態度が、ずっしりと染みわたってきます。

　自分の身を削るように言葉をつづる人がいる。そんな文章に久しぶりに出会った。本書は著者の体験が色濃く反映された短編集だ。
　厳格な祖母との愛憎半ばする関係に束縛される著者の母親は、夜中に大声をあげて目を覚ますことがある。それを目の当たりにしていたわたしも、実は自分も母親と同様に暗闇が怖く眠れず苦しむ。そんな自分と母親の脆さを再確認する「暗闇が怖い」。母と離婚した父を訪ねていくと、父はいつも軍人であったこと、悲惨な闘いを生き抜いたことを自慢したがる。だがわたしは、それが全部嘘であることを知っていて、さらに父の自尊心と強がりがわかるからこそ嫌悪感を覚える。父と娘の哀しい葛藤を描く「魚」。ほとんど年下の女の子ばかりのサマーキャンプに行った私は、夜に散歩しているカウンセラーの女性に声をかけられる。彼女は規則を押し付けるカウンセラーではなく、人間として話をしてくれた。同性への愛の目覚めを描く「ナンシー・ブース、あなたがどこにいるにせよ」。手や足といった両親とそっくりなからだの一部分をじっくり見たとき、ふとした仕草や癖、話し方などが両親とそっくりだと気づいたとき、わたしはいまもどきっとする。こうした受け継いだものへの愛憎を繊細に描く「受け継いだもの」など。
　「魚」を読んだとき、胸がぎゅっとなるようなせつなさに襲われた。「わたし」は、嘘をついている父が嫌なのではない。自分自身にまで嘘をつこうとする、父の弱さを見るのが嫌なのだ。そんな「わたし」の複雑な想いと父娘の微妙なすれ違いが、魚釣りという行為を通して描かれている。また、「受け継いだもの」では、両親が自分の体の中に息づいているという感覚や、どんなに離れていても、どんなに愛し、憎んでいても、「自分はその人たちの肉と血をわけてもらった」という感情の入る余地のないシンプルな事実を描く。それをこんなに説得力のある言葉でつづれるのはすごいと思った

　自伝的連作短編集。レズビアンであることに目覚めること、父親との関係、そんなことが淡々と語らる。淡々とだけれど、けっこう心に爪あとを残すような語りでもありますね。さりげない、煙草をめぐるエピソードなんか、ちょっときます。ブラウンの家族はみんな喫煙者なんだけれど、吸う煙草が違う。ブラウンは母親といろいろな煙草を試したときも、別れて出ていった父親が吸っていた煙草だけは吸わなかった。煙草のエピソードが重いのは、なおも両親とも健康を害して亡くなるなるという、その背景にそれが暗示されているということ。そうして、ブラウンはやがて青春を終える。
　「家庭の医学」で母親を看取ったブラウンが、ここでは父親にも焦点を当てているっていうのがポイント。
