火事で全焼した芝居小屋から見つかった絞殺死体、というミステリ仕立てながら、物語の焦点は、小屋の再建費用のために、母の違う二人の息子のいずれかに名を譲って襲名披露することになった老女形がどちらに継がせるのか、残酷な父に見えるその行動の真意は何なのか、というところに絞られて行きます。六十を過ぎても振袖を着てしなをつくる女形が、長年舞台で鎬を削ってきただけあって、他人に有無を言わせない情の強さが、恐ろしい。

人気絶頂の女形から、役者にアゴで使われる裏方、男娼もしなければ暮らしが立たない端役まで、華やかな舞台の裏のどろどろとした世界を描いています。男の世界でありながら、印象的なのは、老女形の死んだ妻のお美代でした。役者に惚れて人生を狂わす女も、芸道の魔に憑かれてしまった一員。

親兄弟であろうと蹴落とさなければならない芸の道の魔を描いているようで、読み終わったときに見えてくるのは、意外にもその残酷さではありませんでした。優れた芸に対する愛情というのでしょうか。

文化六年巳歳の元日、年頭恒例の舞台も無事済んだその夜、江戸随一の芝居小屋中村座は、隣町から押し寄せてきた火の手に焼け落ちた。翌朝、焼け跡に立った太夫元十一代目中村勘三郎が今後の方策を思案する間もなく、焼け残りの行李から男の他殺体が発見される。

北町同心と同心見習いの二人、ベテランと新人コンビが挑む江戸最大の芝居小屋に繰り広げられる連続殺人事件。今に続く歌舞伎の、江戸時代の名人上手はどんな舞台を作っていたのか、芝居小屋はどう運営されていたのかなど、芸道ものバックステージ物としての興味深い蘊蓄、エピソードをミステリの流れに巧く溶け込ませている。

非道、行ずべからずとは、斯道を全うしようと思うなら、他の事しておっつくもんじゃないよ、ってことらしい。芸人たるもの芸に生きるのが本分。人の道より芸の道ってのは当然のこと。という世界の面白さが、多彩な、味わい深いキャラの魅力とともに描き込まれて、深みと奥行き、懐の深さを感じさせる面白さ。ベタつかないけど優しさを感じさせる人間の描き方がクール。きりっとしてメリハリも効いた文章も魅力的だ。
