この小説にはストーリー性はほとんどありません。
幼い頃に家族内の事故で片目を失った少年・朽木から見た世界が
淡々と語られているだけなのです。
彼の周りにいるのはアルコール依存症の母、滅多に口を聞かない父、
何を考えているのか良く分からない教師、周囲から浮いている転校生
の中井、そして不良の高橋。
時間の流れも人との関わり合いも濃くなく、どこか全体に漂う空気が
薄い。しかも本自体もとても薄い。だからと言って中身が薄っぺらな
わけではありません。

ただし、ここに登場する15歳は現代の子ではなく一昔前の15歳のよう
な気がします。淡々と世界を見ながらもちゃんと周りと折り合いをつ
けている15歳。彼の片目から見た世界は時に歪んでいたり時にストレ
ートに胸に響いたり・・・。そして彼にとって一番の焦りは自分が何
をしたいのか、いや「何もしたいことがない」こと。そんな自分に対
して怒りや遣るせなさをぶつける場所がないことにまた焦る15歳の姿
が伝わってきます。
