境野 勝悟
1932年、横浜生まれ。早稲田大学教育学部国語国文学科卒。私立栄光学園で18年教鞭をとる。在職中、参禅、茶道を専修するかたわら、イギリス、フランス、ドイツなど西欧諸国の教育事情を視察、わが国の教育との比較研究を重ねる。1973年、神奈川県大磯にこころの塾「道塾」を開設。1975年、駒沢大学大学院・禅学特殊研究科博士課程修了。各地で講演会を開催。経営者、ビジネスマンから主婦層に至るまで幅広く人気がある(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

ご自身の体験を踏まえて、「禅」の言葉を解説された本。
「ゆっくり読む、ゆっくり生きる」のサブタイトルよろしく、
本の構成も引用短文、語句とその解釈、生活作文が見開きで書かれている。
分かったようで、結びつかない、読み込めない、
もう少し解説が欲しい箇所もありましたが、
感じることが、何かと何かが頭の中で結びつくような快感があります。
全体の読後感は春の青空のように澄み切ったモノです。

世間には禅についての本が数多ありますが、この本はこのありきたりなタイトルには似合わず、
とても特殊な部類に入るものかと思います。

著者自身が体得した悟りの智恵を、道元の言葉に乗せてありのままに書いたという体裁の本です。
これは禅についての学者じみた解説をした本でも、公案等のありきたりな解釈を示した本でも
ありませんし、ただ単に「○○禅師こう言った」というような事を書き連ねた本でもありません。

公案等をガンバったり、禅の思想を哲学的に分析したりすることに慣れている人にとっては
「この著者は何を当たり前の事ばかりつらつら書いているのだ？」と、もの足りなさ感じるかもしれません。

私はこの本を大変気に入り、いつもカバンに入れて持ち歩いているくらいです。
一言一句に衒いの無い誠実さが溢れています。　
こういうのは、この手の本としてはとても珍しいです（苦笑）。

ただ、「一般的な道元禅の解釈」なるものを求めている人には向かない本かと思います。
既に多かれ少なかれ禅の修行をしており、「禅とは、修行とはどういうことなのか」と自問する
ようなところにある人は、是非読まれると良いかと思います。

1.0 out of 5 stars 内容自体が禅問答のようで、よく理解できませんでした, 2009/9/8
ビギナー向けに禅を易しく解説した本と思って購入しました。
見開き一テーマ（有名な禅語）、右項に大文字で禅語、左項に解説という構成です。
解説の最期は、「道元は○○（禅語）と語っている」という内容で締めくくられています。
しかし、解説の主要部は著者の体験談らしきものが書かれていますが、どうにも締めの言葉とうまく合致しません。無理矢理こじつけている感じです。道元の言葉の本意というか言わんとしている内容の解説ではなく、字句の直訳としか思えません。
私は非才な人間なので、理解が足らないのかも知れませんが、どう読んでも、禅ビギナー向けの解説にはなっていないのです。直訳にほとんど無意味なエッセイらしきものを無理に合わせて原稿用紙を埋めているとしか感じませんでした。
