たしかに、筆者の文体は、時たま、あんた何様？と思わせるような横柄な事も書かれてありますが、それは、あえてこの著者の作戦では。私としては、彼女のゴージャスな事に対する探究心とつい読んでしまうようにさせる力は、さすがだと思います。でも、アジアとかのホテルで、白人がいるからイコール高級みたいな書き方や、植民地趣味に憧れるのは、結構、危険かも。あなたもアジア人でしょ？って突っ込みたくなります。

マドリッドの「リッツ」でのクレームは他の人も書いていますが多少行き過ぎというかクレーマーのようにも見えます。他の部分も演出過剰な文体が鼻に付き、読後感が悪い本でした。

久しぶりにすさまじい本を読んでしまった。これはエッセイなのだろうか？私小説？数多くの高級ホテルを旅して回った「かっこいい」自分に対するオマージュ？

気のきいたことを書いてやろうというお手軽な自意識と、英語ができる自分が高級ホテルでエグゼクティヴの白人男性にもてることを自慢する嫌味でこの本は成り立っている。だからといって、そんなたぐいの文章がすべてダメってことは決していえない。いくら自意識過剰で嫌味な文章だって、面白いものは面白いんだから（昔、ミス・ミナコ・サイトウっていうのがいたよね。あれは面白かった）。
でもこの本はぼくには面白さがわからない。アカの他人が読んで、なかなか共感しにくい文章なのね。なぜなら、自意識に対する解析がないから文章に批評性!が見受けられないし、嫌味が芸の域に達していないので娯楽性にも乏しいためだ。

簡単にいえば、この本の著者は「叶姉妹に学べ」ってことです。叶姉妹は、自分たちが自意識過剰で嫌味なキャラを演じてることをよく知っている。だから、彼女らのパフォーマンスには批評性（これも簡単にいうと「自分のセールスポイントと弱点をよく知っていること」とでも説明できるかな）が感じられるわけ。
