これの読書には時間がかかる。
それはこの本を読んでいる時に、
他の文献を紐解くことになり、
なかなか進まないのだ。

哲学史の知識がある人なら、
簡単なことなのかもしれない。

それでも“歴史”や“自由”という概念を確かめ、
それを再定義しながらの文章は
改めて歴史や哲学というものをも見つめなおすことになり、
とっても（私見であるが）役に立つと思う。

それは一般的な“ジョウシキ”を念頭において、
この文章を読むと、単純な批難につながってしまう。
「そんなこと起きていないじゃないか」「チャンチャラおかしいね」
という批判を浴びることになるだろう。

それでも私はこの文章を「面白い」
（多少難解な言い回しが多いが）と思って読んだ。

“認識の欲望”というのも頷ける。

歴史とは何かを問うている壮大な歴史書。
著者のフランシス・フクヤマが1989年に The National Interestで
発表した "The End of History?" が本書の基になっている。

私が読んだのは1992年の第一版の方である。

本書は「歴史」を「唯一の一貫した進歩のプロセス」であると捉える
ことから出発する。フクヤマは人間について考察し、その本性として
「認知」を求める欲望があり、歴史を前進させてきたのは、その人間
の「認知を求める闘争」であるという結論に至る。その認知への欲望
を満たすための最も望ましい体制がリベラルな民主主義であり、これ
が確立されることで「歴史」は終焉する。

リベラルな民主主義は多くの深刻な問題を抱えているが、それはその
原理を否定するほどの問題ではない。これまで歴史上に現れては消え
ていった多くの体制に比べると、その内部矛盾ははるかに小さいもの
である。

本論はプラトンやカント、ヘーゲル、ニーチェなどの思想家の人間観
や国家観を踏まえた上で展開されており、特にヘーゲルの観念論の影
響を強く受けていることが読み取れる。


近年、西洋視点の発展論が批判され、各地域での文化に沿ったものが
良しとされる意見が多いが、民主主義の普遍的な正当性を考える上で
大きな役に立つだろう。

なお、第４部の２、３章の自由主義経済に関する記述のところで日本
人の国民的特徴について、言及している。だが、集団第一主義や若者
の反抗心の欠如などを挙げているが、やや単純化しすぎである点は否
めない。

ハイエクの通訳であった渡部氏ならではの翻訳である。面白い本をわけのわからない日本語で台無しにする翻訳者が多いなかで渡部氏訳の
日本語はまともで、かつ解りやすい。
