人生を充実させるための、「人との付き合い方」「読書の仕方」「勉強の仕方」「夢の持ち方・かなえ方」について書かれている。

言葉にされると非常に当たり前なことが多いが、それらを意識して実行できている人がどれほどいることだろうか？

著者が読者と同じ目線で語りかけているような口調も、説教臭くなりがちなこの手の本を読みやすくしている。

仕事に行き詰ったり、人生について悩んだときに読み返したいと思った本。

著者は多くの本を読み、大きな影響を受けてきた。ここには人生を豊かに過ごすには、いかに考え、いかに行動すべきかが語られている。
古今東西の本からの引用もあり、心に残ったフレーズも多かった。

「読書は充実した人間をつくり、会話は機転のきく人間をつくり、書くことは正確な人間をつくる」
「大事なのは今ある環境の中で、どう工夫して自分の時間と空間を創造していくかである」
「孤独という時間なくして自己の成長はあり得ない」
「大きな仕事に素早く取り組む人は、細かい仕事など残り時間で瞬時に片付けてしまう」
「余暇というのは自分自身の人生そのものであると認識することが大切だ」
「つねに物事に対して幅広く問題意識を持ち、それを追求しようという姿勢で臨んでいれば、自然と生きた情報も集まり、自分の考えもまとまるものだ」
「幸福とは自分自身の努力と修養によって勝ち取って感ずるものである」など、付箋を貼りながら読んだ。

まさに、人生の分水嶺がここにある。渡部氏が著した、『知的生活の方法』『人間らしさの構造』の集約だ。すべての若者と、迷いある人々に、必ずや開眼を感ずる発見があるに違いない。心の奥底からやりたいと思うことをやっているときは、苦痛を感ずることがないということは真理で、内なる声に従って自己実現を図っていくことの意義を、かつての著作とは別の角度から、語っている。
