イラストを趣味で描く、仕事で描く･･･。そんなときに人物を描く事は多くあるものです。

　そんな人物の個性や表情を際立たせるには、特に顔や手というのが、重要になるかと思います。しかし、顔・手というのは、人体の中ではかなり複雑で難しい部位で、簡単には描けるようにはなれません。しかしそれを描けるようになれば、人物画描きとして怖いものがなくなる自信も生まれそうです。

　この本の特徴としては、まずは簡単に理解できるところから実例を交えて解説が始まり、部位の構造の知識に続き、どうしてそこにシワが入るかなどの理由も添えられ、絵という媒体に入るまでに頭でイメージする事ができるような、さまざまな知識が詰め込まれています。

　この本は、デッサン本として頭部や手に重点を置いたものですが、氏の絵に関する考え方を知ると、なお一層”描きたい・描けるようになりたい”という気分にさせられます。最初の「読者のみなさんへ」はぜひご一読された方が良いと思います。

　もちろん本文内は充実の例題が多数掲載されており、コツなんかも余すことなく記載されています。より簡単に理解するための解説も目からウロコの内容で、どうしても手が上手く描けない、頭部が描けないという方は参考にされてはいかがでしょうか？

このようなデッサンは、実物を見ながら描くのが上達のコツですが、早々いろんな人の顔を見に行くわけにもいきませんので、この作者のデッサン絵を見ながら描いても、十分勉強になるかと思います。

A・ルーミスの抜群の見本デッサンは見ているだけで楽しく、このような絵を描く人の本であることで学ぶ意欲も起こると思います。また、他の本も含め、ルーミスのテキストは未熟な絵描きに必要なヒントを与えようという善意に溢れ、懇切丁寧で徹底した解説を行い手抜きがありません。
欠点というわけではないですが、参考に書きますと、この本が出版されたのは1977年。この時すでにある程度の年齢であったルーミスの絵の雰囲気はさすがに古いです。それは、流行に影響されやすい若者の絵に特に顕著で、50~60年代のアメリカらしさを強く反映します。そして、当時、美しいと考えられていた顔や体型が基準であり、それも現代とは違うかもしれません。とはいえ、テキストとしての価値が下がったとは思えず、顔や手をもっと美しく描きたいと考える特に若い方にお薦めできるものと思います。

自分はこの本を買う時「やさしい人物画」の
手と顔の部分の内容を更に深い所まで突っ込んだ発展系のような内容を期待していたのですが、
実際には期待していた程深く突っ込んでおらず

・頭部、手の解剖図、基本的なバランス、作画に必要ないくつかのエッセンス
・男女、各年齢ごとのバランスの違いとお手本

がメインで、発展系というよりは基本+資料集のような印象を受けました。


しかし内容が薄いというわけではなく、論理的に分り易く、
クセの無い著者の素晴らしい絵をバランス良く交えて説明されているので
「さらに頭部と手にこだわりたい！」
という人はもちろん、そうじゃない人にも一読の価値は大いにあると思います。
