良いインタヴューとは、好意が７割、挑発が３割、という話を聞いたことがあります。
この本は、他の選手本同様「挑発」が足りません。９：１の割合です。
前園は、その短い全盛期には光り輝いていた存在です。日本サッカーの将来そのものといっていい存在でした。その凋落の謎を誰もが惜しみ、その理由を知りたいと思っています。
その理由を「移籍が無効になったモチベーションの低下」でオチつけするには、なんとももったいない。それは金子達人が１０年前にやってるしね。
後半の流浪のサッカー人生は、読んでいて辛くなる内容ですが、サッカー選手のキャリアと難しさを感じさせ、趣があります。
単行本程度の値段なら適正なコストパフォーマンスかも。

28年振りのオリンピック出場を決めた男子サッカー日本キャプテン。2勝1分けながら決勝トーナメントに進めなかった現実は、まるでその後の彼のサッカー人生を象徴するかのようだった。練習を積んでも、劣悪な環境の近いチームで結果を出しても、かつての姿にはもどれない。彼自信の責任と言えばそれまでだが、全ての原因が彼にあると決めつけるのは安易かもしれない。彼の歩んだ、未成熟な日本サッカーの影の部分が描かれている。けして昔話ではなく今日でも多くのサッカー選手に影響をあたえる一冊かもしれない。

選手も、サポーターも、メディアも。誰もが信頼を寄せたキャプテンだった。誰もが魅了されたドリブラーだった。でも、彼が主役だった時間は短かった。中田英寿、小野伸二、中村俊輔と、取って代わる選手が次々と出てきたから、無責任な観戦者は徐々にゾノのことを忘れてしまった。
アトランタから12年経った北京五輪直前、表紙のあの野獣のような目を見たとき、「なぜゾノはつぶれてしまったのか」と、改めて疑問を抱いた。そして包み隠さず語られる前園自身の回顧、中田、城彰二、小倉隆史らの証言は、疑問を少しずつ晴らしてくれた。
「いざ、世界へ」という過渡期にあった日本サッカー界で、誰もゾノを守ることができなかった。これから世界に出ようという有望な若者を、前園と同じような苦難に直面させてはならない。『12年目の真実』は、そのためのある種の教材のようにも思える。
