アマチュア作家がプロ作家を目指すうえでの問答集の形態をとっている。
文章表現テクニックから、出版界のさまざまな情報（原稿料の相場とか編集者との力関係とか）、情報収集のコツなど、盛りだくさんのことが説明されている。
全部そのまま真に受けてよいのかどうかは不明だが、これらの情報に疎い人にとって有益情報であることに間違いはない。
現にぼくも「知ってよかった」と思うことが多々あった。
特に、資料として揃えておきたいのは、これこれと具体的に列挙してあるのには、若桜木さんは親切な人だと思う。
先日読んだ、「好かれる人は1％違う」を地でいっている人かもしれない。

あと気づいたことは、アマチュア作家の文章表現への質問が、自分の書いた原稿に愛着があるあまり推敲で直せず、直さなかったことをどうしても正当化したくて質問しているというパターンの多いこと。
この質問はやらせの可能性があるのだが、それにしても多い。
若桜木さんのアマチュア作家への偏見かもしれない。

「いい作品を書いた作家」が「稼ぐ」ことはあっても、「稼いだ作家」が「いい作品」を出しているわけではあるまい。
この著者たちは「稼ぐ」をキーにした段階で、「作家としていい作品を書く」という、当然のことを捨ててしまったのだろう。
なまじ本気で書いているだけに、救いのない本である。

せめて、わざとタイトルに「稼ぐ」とつけながら、「悪質な作家の実例＝『こんな作家になってはダメだよ』という、作家志望者への警句」に持っていく「芸」があればなあ……。
もっともこの著者たちに、そのような高度の技術を使いこなす力量などないだろうが。

さる被差別部落問題を抉った著名作家には、隠された過去がある。実は戦中に、食べていくために、軍国賛美小説を何篇も発表していたのだ。

たしかに作家とて、霞を食っているのではない。家族を養って、食べていくためには稼がねばならないだろう。
しかしそんなに稼ぎたければ、わざわざ作家などと言う因果な職業を選ばなくてもいいものだ。
また、作家として確実に稼げる方法とて残っている。それは時流に媚びればいい。
共産党が政権をとればマルクスを崇め、ナチスが主導権を握ればヒトラー賞賛をすればいい。そして今日の日本のような高度消費社会であれば、消費傾向をリサーチすればいいだけの話である。
しかしそんな無節操な人間が作家になったところで、いったいどうなるのか？　作品は後世に残らないどころか、馬鹿な読者を育てる意味で、かえってマイナスとしか思えない。
著者たちは、作家として根本的な認識を誤っている。

ま、「こんな連中でも作家になれる」という意味では、いい本なのかも知れないが。
