浅い水たまりで、子どもが連続して水死する。奇怪な事件が起こっていた。少年は、神秘的な美少女と、不思議な世界を探索する。水たまりの鏡のような表面。すぐ裏側に存在する場所。夜の図書館の、深い時刻。美少女の召喚に応えて、闇の底に燦然と回転する光車の美。海外の有名なファンタジーの諸作品と比較しても、その独自な光輝は、まったく色褪せていない。ファンの熱い要望に応えての再刊。初版と同じ司修の、気品とエロティシズムの混淆した、銅版画のような挿し絵と装幀。日本ファンタジーの屈指の名作。あなたの書棚に、一冊を。

どうしてこのように奔放なイメージを言葉に表せるのでしょうか？
描きたい世界を構築することができるごく僅かな作家が持つ稀有の才能。
光車、地霊文字、さかさまの国、夜間閲覧室といったゾクゾクするようなイメージが惜しげもなく展開され、まぶしいばかりの想像力が溢れだすようです。
ぜひ、多くの人に読んでもらいたいと願わざるを得ません。
とても貴重な作品です。

　1973年に初版として刊行され、その後、ちくま文庫版としても出ていた本書が、今年ブッキングから復刊されました。作品のことは全く知らなかったのですが、「どんな話なんだろう。わざわざ復刊されたってことは、根強い人気がある作品ってことだろうし……」ということで読んでみました。

　主人公の小学六年生の一郎が、龍子（りゅうこ）を始めとする同級生の仲間たちとともに、敵と戦っていく話。タイトルにもなっている「光車（ひかりぐるま）」をめぐる攻防が、一郎たちと敵との間で繰り広げられていきます。
　光車の輝く円模様や不思議な形をした地霊文字、鏡像世界のようなさかしまの国、町の道路に染み出してくる水など、それらのイメージが妖しく、鮮やかに描き出されていたのが印象に残ります。殊に、表紙の装丁にも描かれている光車の描写が美しく、キラキラとした光を放っていたのが忘れられません。「光車って、子供の頃に歯車を回転させて描いた花模様に似ているなあ。あれは、なんだったっけ？」と調べてみたら、スピログラフという名前の玩具だったことが分かりました。

　善悪二元論の骨組みを許にしたファンタジーなんですが、ラストでは、それだけにとどまらない不思議な余韻があるのですね。物語に意図された善悪二元論のことについては、巻末の「作者おぼえがき」に簡単に記されているのですが、この話は単純に善と悪といった具合に切り離してしまえるものではなく、コインの表と裏のような関係を表現したかったのではないかと、私はそのように受け止めました。
