　未曾有の被害をもたらした阪神大震災から１０年が過ぎようとしています。あの朝、映像に映し出された惨状はとても他人事とは思えませんでした。その数日間、おそらく日本中の人々の中に「なんとか力になりたい」という機運が広がり、ボランティアを買ってでた人、救援物資を送ろうとした人が動き出したと思います。

　しかし、事件事故というのはややもすると人々の記憶から遠ざかってしまいます。すっかりあの日の出来事は他人事になってしまっています。
　そんな時に本書を読み、新たな衝撃を受けました。

　「西尾荘の出来事」は当時の在京メディアでは決して伝えきれていなかったと思います。マスコミは死者の数の多さ（６０００人にのぼる）を伝え、震災の甚大さは理解できましたが、その一人一人の命の重みには言及されなかったと思います。ところが、本書ではそうした亡くなった人の命の重み、亡くなった方の周りの人々の悲しみを伝え、心にじーんときました。
　一人一人かけがえのない命を授かって生きているということを実感しました。
　人の命の尊さ、人と人の繋がりに鈍感になっている現代。特に若い人たちにはぜひとも読んでもらいたい本です。
　震災から時間が過ぎてもあの日の出来事をいまでも語り継いでいる著者住田さんに力強さを感じました。
