第二次世界大戦前夜、駐印大使の娘としてインドはラジャスタン地方に渡ったイギリス人・モイラの恋と激動の一代記。
モイラの機転や何事にも立ち向かってゆく強さに惹かれつつ、少女漫画に不可欠である王子様キャラにクラクラします。
この王(子)様、ラジャスタンの蒼のマハラジャ・シルバは、最初は少し頼りないのですが、登場する度に成長し「そりゃ惚れるわ」というエピソードがてんこ盛りです。
「歴史物っぽいし、何となく難しそう」と構えずに、波乱万丈→ハッピーエンドの由緒正しき少女漫画として読むのが正解だと思います。

父親の仕事の関係でインドに住むことになったイギリスの女の子が主人公。陰謀や暗殺計画うずまくインドでひとりぼっちの王子と出会いやがて結婚するまでの序盤はロマンチックなシンデレラストーリーです。
でもインドの植民地支配から独立しようとする大きな歴史の流れの中で、やがて無くなっていく王室のラストエンペラーの物語でもあります。少女漫画的恋愛ストーリーとしての側面と、社会派漫画としての側面と、作者お得意の砂漠地方の世界とが相まって二つと無い素晴らしい作品になっています。
王様が登場する漫画は沢山ありますが、この王様ほど素晴らしい王様を見たことがありません。愛と勇気と知恵でもって困難な状況を盛り超えていく二人がとても素敵。
悪役も含めた脇役達もみんないい味出してます！インドの歴史も少し知ることができるでしょう。
古い作品ですが、十年以上何度も何度も繰り返し読んで今でもやっぱり一番といっていいくらい大好きな作品です。何度読んでも面白いです！

神坂さんにこういう漫画があったことを知って、
古本屋で探すしかないかと思っていたところに
タイミングよく文庫化されたので、飛びつきました。

結論から言うと、ひとこと「楽しかった」。
若い女の子の夢物語のようなところもあれば、
妙に現実的な部分もあり、
一方で、あまり（自分には）なじみのない
独立前後のインドについて興味を持たせる効果もあり。
安易だ、という意見もありそうに思うけれど
軽くて、でもまじめな漫画だと思います。

神坂さんのコミックは、若いころはどうも好きに慣れなかったけど
（シルクロードシリーズがぎりぎり）
歳をとってからは結構お気に入りです。

５巻まで出揃ったところなので
一気に読みましょう。
