　本のさし絵は、文章にあわせて後で描かれます。
　絵本の場合は絵がメインですが、やはり文章を先に書くことが多いようです。
　本書は、「最初に絵を決めて、あとでその絵に合わせた物語を書く」というめずらしい順序で書かれました。

　まずは、表紙の絵をじーっとご覧ください。


　いかがですか。

　この絵のタイトルは「サロメ」です。
　サロメは新約聖書に登場するユダヤの王家の血筋をひく女性で、歪んだ恋心から洗礼者ヨハネの首をはねさせる、というオスカー・ワイルドの戯曲で知られています。
　皿の上に乗せた預言者の首を持つ女、というモチーフで多くの画家が作品を残しているそうで、樋上さんも皿の上に生首を乗せた図柄を踏襲しています。

　しかし、この絵の女性は何とも無表情です。
　オスカー・ワイルドの原作では、切った首にキスして、「お前の口に口づけしたよ」と語りかける不気味な女性でしたが、樋上さんの絵にはドロドロした情念と無縁の少女が描かれています。
　おまけに、胸を半分はだけているのに、エロティックな印象も与えません。

　こんな不思議な樋上さんの連作絵画が、全部で４シリーズ小川洋子さんの手元にとどき、小川さんは絵のイメージに合わせた物語を紡ぎはじめます。
　いずれも短いおとぎ話ですので、内容の紹介は差し控えますが、帯に「残酷で可憐な物語」とあるように、どの物語も、血塗られた結末が待っています。
　樋上さんといい、小川さんといい、やはり女性は、男性よりも「痛み」や「血」に強いのでしょうか。
　男性には近寄れない世界を垣間見た気がします。

　樋上さんは最後に、「読む人の心にしみ込んでいくでしょう」と結んでいます。おとなの絵本として、私もお薦めです。

　ただし、女性向け。

　男性が読むときは、女性向け週刊誌を覗き見するような気恥ずかしさを感じることがありますので、ご注意ください。

残酷＆エロスの童話が多い中静かに残酷でなまめかしい作品。

ワタクシは最初のスワンキャンディーのお話が一番好きです。
次が人魚です。

まさに、「おとぎ話」です。それも、現代の、大人の「おとぎ話」です。

この本の魅力は、小川洋子の文章と樋上公実子の絵のコラボレーションの素晴らしさでしょう。装丁から、本を１ページめくっただけで、その魅力に虜になってしまいました。
樋上公実子独特の、妖艶な雰囲気のする素晴らしい絵が、小川洋子のそれとない文章の中に秘められた残酷さのようなものとぴたっとフィットしています。

いくつかのおとぎ話をベースに書かれた物語は、どの一つをとっても魅力的であると同時に、胸にぐさっとくるものを持っています。現代が必要としている「おとぎ話」とは、こんな物語なのでしょう。
個人的には、「人魚宝石職人の一生」が一番胸に来ました。
出来ればこの続編を二人のコラボレーションで作って欲しいな、という気がしました。
