デイヴィー,ヘレン・K.
子どもの頃から読書と絵を描くことが好きで、美術系の大学に進学。卒業研究は子どもの本の制作だった。数多くの絵本を手がけている。アメリカ合衆国カリフォルニア州在住

半澤典子。2000年に日本大学の獣医学科を卒業し、東京都恩賜上野動物園に就職。就職後は、飼育係として、ケープペンギン、マカロニペンギン、オウサマペンギンの飼育に携わる。現在は大島公園事務所に勤務している(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

ペンギンは年にひとつ卵を産むようです。その卵を両親が代わり番こに温めます。
お母さんの産んだ卵をお父さんは自分の足の上に乗せて、お母さんが帰るまで２ヶ月、飲まず食わずで温めます。卵を抱えたオス同士群れを作って寒さから身を守ります。
２ヶ月経って丁度ヒナが孵った頃にお母さんが帰って来ます。そうしたら今度はお父さんが食べ物を捜しに出て行きます。お母さんはヒナを足の上に乗せて、自分が食べたものを少しづつ吐きもどしてヒナにやります。
ペンギンはかわりばんこにそんなふうにして子育てをします。

ペンギンの子育てを見ていると、なんだか私はまだまだ覚悟が足りないなあ〜と思わせられます。

テレビで、このお父さんお母さんの長旅の様子を見たことがあります。卵を守るお父さんもつらい立場ですが、エサを求めて旅するお母さんの行程も過酷で、途中で死んでしまうこともよくあるようです。そうなれば、残されたお父さんもせっかく孵ったヒナも死ぬことになってしまいます。

しかも、ペンギンは見た目も鳴き声も全く同じように見えますが、ちゃんと家族を識別しているのだとテレビでは言っていました。

そういうことを思いながらこの絵本を読むと、本能だけでこうしているのではなくて、やっぱりそこには愛情があるように思えます。
