３びきの子ブタ、ジャックと豆の木などの誰もが聞いたことがある身近なイギリスの昔話と、同じ英語圏とはいえ考え方も、語り方もちがうアイルランドの昔話を、一冊にまとめてあります.日本児童文学の基礎を築いた訳者が、子どもの耳になじむ、リズミカルで美しい日本語に訳しているため、日本では出版以来学校や図書館で長い間読み聞かせのテキストとしても使われていました.こどもが本好きになるための大事な一冊でもあり、大人がよみかえしてみても、必ずよかったと思える本がこの値段で買えるのはお得です.是非ご自分の本棚に並べてください.

ジェイコブズのイギリス昔話集などをもとに、児童文学者石井桃子が、原話にほぼ忠実に訳した昔話集。お話のすじや言葉の意味に忠実なだけでなく、「英語の音の面白さ」までを日本語にうまくうつしてある。児童図書館員など、現場のプロの間でも定評のある本。親子で楽しむのにお勧め。

単純な言葉の繰り返し、簡潔な話。
昔話の良さは、この二つに集約されると思う。

この作品にはイギリスやアイルランドで語られてきた昔話が多く収められている。

単純な繰り返しは、子どもを夢中にさせるようで、普段は自分で本を読む５年になる息子も、下の子どもたちに読んでいる時、そばによってきました。そして、そこからどんどん話が広がりました。楽しいひと時をお子さんと過ごすこと請合います。
