数ある『オオカミ王ロボ』の翻訳で、この本ほどロボが毅然と、誇り高く感じる訳はなかった。それは、訳者、今泉氏の動物を見るまなざしに尊敬がこもっているからだ。訳者によって、ロボが違ってみえる。この本によって、今まで味わったことがない凛とした美しいロボに遭うことができた。

「シートン自身の挿絵」にまず驚きました。こんなに絵も上手い人だったのですね。また、今までの「シートン動物記」と比べて，格段に美しい文章です。猟師の言葉や，自然を描写している個所に、特にそれを感じます。中1の息子もこの本が大好きです。ロボがどんな罠も猟師もあざ笑うかのように逃げるところや、だんだんシートンがロボを追い詰めていく展開は、なんど読んでもあきません。

シートンの時代には、まだ、なわばりという言葉がなかったそうです。
でも、その習性を、シートンは“観察”から気づいていたなんて!!
注釈で知りました。オオカミの行動を、ひとつひとつの情報ではなく、物語としてじっくり読ませてくれます。
そういう意味では、擬人化することで構成された、他の動物ものとは、
全然違うかも。

ロボに対する感じ方が、子どもの頃とはだいぶ違い、読後の余韻をも楽しめました。
