荒れ狂う波に翻弄される１隻のスクーナー、スラウギ号。そこに乗っていたのは、14才のゴードンを最年長とする15人の少年たちだけだった。・・・

冒険物語の巨匠ジュール・ベルヌの傑作で、『15少年漂流記』の名前で日本のお馴染みの冒険小説です。ニュージーランドのチェアマン校の生徒達で、年齢も国籍も全く異なった少年たちが、アクシデントによって余儀なくされた孤島でのサバイバルを得て人間的に大きく成長していくのですが、少年同士の固執など、等身大の少年達が生き生きと描かれています。
正義感が強くて勇敢なブリアン、思慮深く冷静沈着のゴードン、ちょっと我の強いドニファン、料理が上手な黒人水夫モコなど、15人の個性豊かな少年たちが繰り広げる島の探検やサバイバル生活、島の動物や海賊との戦いには、こっちまでドキドキハラハラさせられます。フランス人であるブリアンとイギリス人のドニファンの固執など、当時のイギリスとフランスの関係を知るともっと理解できるところもあります。協力しないと生きていけない状況の中で、少年たちの心の葛藤が描かれている場面は、読んでいるこっちまで感情移入させられてしまいます。ただ勇敢な少年像が描かれているだけではなくて、少年たちの心情がありのままに描かれているのも、この作品の人気の１つではないでしょうか。
ブリアン達と一緒に2年間の冒険を一緒に共有でき、ラストシーンで同じような充実感を味わえる爽快感！この『２年間の休暇』は、私の中では冒険小説の最高傑作です。

小学生の頃、水疱瘡に苦しんでいたときに父が買ってくれた。
見事な装丁の愛蔵版である。
厚くずっしりと重く、布団にあお向けになって読めるものではなかったが、とにかく嬉しくて痒いのを忘れた。

裕福な学校の子供たちが、誤って航海の前夜に小船で漂流、無人島に辿り付く。

人の深奥の混沌を覗き込むような「蝿の王」と比べると、人物・話の展開とも牧歌的。
主人公は初めから英雄らしく強く正しい振舞いで、仇役はお約束どおりお金持ちのお坊ちゃんで劣りまきを連れている。
喧嘩別れ、仲直り、新たな敵の登場、切り札となる強力な味方の登場。RPGの基本形である。
そしてハッピーエンド。

子供の頃夢中になったのはストーリーよりも、無人島での生活だった。
浜での貝拾いや、河での漁、島の探検、狩など。

今では島から帰還してからの後日談が気にかかる。
また子供たちを海に「流して」しまった後の大人たちの2年間が。
