「むかしむかしのそのむかし・・秋田の国の八郎は・・大きな大きな山男」
こんな歌で幕が開いた子どもの学芸会でこのお話を知りました。
毎年毎年村を襲う激しい海・・
そこに山を担いで沈み村を救った八郎潟にまつわる物語
そこから齋藤隆介さんの絵本の世界に引き込まれました。
齋藤隆介さんの秋田弁で語りかけと滝平二郎さんの絵とのコンビが絶妙で、

いろり端でばっちゃんから昔話を聞いている・・そんな空間を感じます。
同じ秋田の大男のお話にお二人の「三コ」があり、物語の中に「八郎」が出てきます。
大きな体を使って・・命を懸けて、村を・・村のわらしこを・・若い衆を・・
「八郎」は荒れ狂う海に沈み水から救います。
「三コ」は燃え広がる山に体をかぶせ火から救います??

何度読んでも、何度読み聞かせても、心に響きます。

壮大なスケールで、大男八郎の活躍を描いた昔話。滝平二郎の美しい挿絵、秋田弁の素朴な語り口の織り成すハーモニーがすばらしい。おおきなおおきな八郎の頭のまわりを小鳥たちが「ぴちぴち、ちいちい、ちゅくちゅく、かっこー」と飛び回る様を想像するだけで、なんだか豊かな気持ちになります。いつまでも手元に置いておきたい一冊です。

この本との出会いは小学校2年生の時。小児歯科の待合室でした。
「こんな本がこの世にあるのか」というようなすごい衝撃を受けた覚えがあります。治療前なのに号泣し、しばらくその歯医者に行くたびにこの本を読んでいました。

それから数十年。大人になってふと買ってみたこの本を見て…「あれっ、カラーじゃなかったの？！」…そういう例があることは知っていました。子供の時に読んだ絵本が印象が強かった場合、記憶の中で彩色されてしまうことがあるという…。
しかし自分自身で体験していたとは。今でも白黒の絵を見ると違和感があるほどです。

つい個人的な体験ばかり書いてしまいましたが、とにかく強力な、心に響く絵本です。
ただ、それだけに、よみきかせするよりは一人静かに向かい合った方が力を発揮するように思います。なので、おすすめは小学校中学年くらいから。
この本が気に入った方は、「三コ」と「花さき山」もぜひ。
