「敦煌出土の文書や写経だといわれて、世界の博物館・図書館などにあるものの中で、かなりの部分が偽物らしい」という指摘は、攻撃的な勇足があるとはいえ、どうも、部分的には、本当らしく思われます。この主張は従来は、一部の人々の間で、裏話的に真偽・根拠も曖昧なまま語られてきたのですが、この安い本で、広く一般に、知られるようになりました。

私も遥か昔、京都国立博物館に寄贈された守屋コレクションの敦煌古写経がほとんど偽物らしいという小さな新聞報道をみて、「敦煌写本に偽物なんてあるのかなあ？」と不審に思ったのを覚えています。

著者の主張は、「ペリオコレクション、スタインが最初に買い取った分、北京政府が押収した分は問題がなく、これを基準とする。それ以外は真偽が混じっている」と要約できると思います。
「敦煌文書」を資料として利用する人、敦煌写本の断片でも買ってみようかという人は、一応、読んでおくべき暴露本？　　かもしれません。

さて、東京の書道博物館の敦煌写本は、古美術商を経由したものですが、なかなか良いものがあるようです。例えば、「法華玄賛第７」の唐時代の写本ですが、見事な草書ですし、紙質も問題はないようです。この写本はパリのペリオコレクションにも、別の巻があり、写真をみるとそっくりの形式ですから問題のないものと考えます。著者は,古美術商を経由して日本に運ばれた敦煌写本には、１割以下しか本物がないような言い方をしているようですが、かなり言い過ぎだと思いました。
著者は1989年に逝去しているので、遺稿を校訂したものであるためか、著者の校訂を経てない3章以降には、矛盾や、混乱や不合理な点があります。
