エスノグラフによる日本の研究機関の問題点を明らかにしている興味
深い本である。主に大学と公設の研究機関について書いてあるが、ど
の企業の中でも似たようなものがあるだろう。
この中で問題があるとすれば、一体誰が意思決定をして、誰が責任を
取るのかが(実際にはどちらも曖昧である）書かれていない点である
が、かなり核心をついている。

恐らく多くの日本人研究者は、本書の内容に関して「そうそう、その通り。そんなこと言われなくても十分問題点も認識してます。」と思うことであろう。本書は日本人の心理状態、思考プロセス、あるいは文化にも深く踏み込んで書かれているため、研究環境以外の分野にも当てはまる内容であると思う。

では、どうすれば事態は良い方向へ向かうのか？本書ではその点に言及していない。しかし、答えは明快である。日産が外国人のゴーン社長を起用して復活したように、また、サッカーの日本チームが外国人のトルシエ監督起用で快進撃を続けているように、研究分野の意思決定機構（つまりお金の出所と人事研を握る部署）のトップに外国人を起用すれば良いのである。

日本人研究者なら誰でも認識している問題、しかし誰も改革できない問題をあえて指摘している著者は、他ならぬ外国人である。日本に研究の下地や能力は有り余るほどある。後は反感を買っても意思決定し、実行する人の存在だけが必要なのである。それは、残念ならが同朋（日本人）では出来ないという理由は、上記に挙げた日産やサッカーの例だけで十分であろう。

恐らく日本人研究者の１割程度が、本書の内容に関して「そうそう、その通り。そんなこと言われなくても十分問題点も認識してます。」と思うことであろう。この数字をもって、多いと表現するか、少ないと表現するかは、自由だ。

さて、どうすれば事態は良い方向へ向かうのか？本書ではその点に言及していない。しかし、研究者の大半がこのような認識を持つようになれば、事態の改善に繋がることは間違いない。その意味で、本書のような認識を各所において、あるいは政治的に、広めていくことは大変重要な意義を持つ。
