山本弘の書く作品には、常に新鮮なサプライズが含まれている。 読者の意表をつく展開を必ず用いるのがそのやり方だというのだが、設定そのものにそれを持ちこんだのが、本書である。

剣と魔法のファンタジーといえば、どうしても「伝説の」勇者が付き物だが、山本弘はそれを否定する。 憧れこそが、冒険の糧だよ！と。

何の変哲も無い…それどころか人より劣ったように見える少年による冒険。頼れる物は知恵と勇気のみ。 これが極上の物語でなくて何であろう？！

巷に溢れるファンタジーにフと嫌気がさした時、手にとって見て欲しい。新しい世界がきっと開けるはずだ。

主人公の少年サーラは11歳、一介の村の少年で、冒険者レベル０。
村に現れるようになったキマイラ退治を引き受けた冒険者の
パーティーに同行して、冒険者になりたい気持ちを強める……。

本作品が他のS.W.RPGノベルと一線を画するのは、
やはり主人公が完全な０からのスタートというところだろう。
熟練冒険者の中で、少年が少しずつ成長していく過程を描いた
良作シリーズの第１巻。

主人公以外のキャラたち（パーティーのメンバー）にも
スポットが当てられているのも高く評価できる。
サーラとメンバーの会話にも注目して読みたい。
