5.0 out of 5 stars 一般の文書作成にも役立つスタイルブック, 2000/11/13
翻訳の先輩に勧められた本。本業はマニュアル制作ではなく、コンピュータ関係の英日翻訳だが、マニュアル関係の翻訳も多いため参考になる。特に単独ではなくグループで翻訳をてがけるときは、使用漢字、送り仮名、表記法など、グループ間の用字用語の統一が大きな課題となる。詳細な辞書、用字用語ガイダンスを提供するクライアントもあるが、そうした指針がない場合の用語統一の目安となる。

「なぜ、そうするのか」という解説が必ず載っているので（納得するかどうかは別として）説得力がある。なぜ、「のみ」ではなく「だけ」にするのかとか、「による」ではなく「によって」なのかの説明は興味深かったし説得力があった。参考文献の紹介も厚い。

日本の作文教育は、「他人にわかりやすく説明する文章!の書き方」をあまり教えていない。文章読本の類は多くても、こうした実務的な文章の書き方の本は少なく貴重。

この本と、「朝日新聞の用語の手引き」があれば、日本語表記に関する最低限のガイドラインができる。常に読者の立場に立ち、読み誤りのない一意性を持たせる、というポリシーは、マニュアル・ライティング、翻訳のみならず、一般の文書作成にも役立つと思う。

マニュアルに限らず、提案書、トレーニングテキスト、プロジェクトのガイドラインなど全てのライティングに、この本をライティングチームの標準としています。　ドキュメントは読み手に読んで頂けなければ意味が無いわけですから、
顧客満足度の視点で言うと、ライターの顧客は読み手になるわけです。　この本を標準とすることにより文章が読みやすくなるのはもとより、ライターにそのような読み手への気配りの心が芽生えるのが、とても良いと思いました。
