大学新入生がまず読む数学書として最適な本です。数学の講義を聴講するよりもこうした本を流し読むほうが、ためになるでしょう。高校生でも読めるレベルで、数学の基本的な知識を理解するための本質を、物語的な数学小説で語っています。『この数学書がおもしろい』の中で、元数学者の秋葉忠利広島市長が、この本の原書を推薦されていますが、著者の講義をその場で聞くような、臨場感もあります。社会人も、数学の思考法や論理的思考法を復習するために、有効でしょう。

5.0 out of 5 stars 数学の知的冒険に誘われたい人に共感を与える本, 2006/4/26
書名の「冒険」には二つの意味が込められていると思う。話題が散りばめられている冒険談と、数学の知的冒険という意味である。数学はとかく格式張った定理と証明の形式で語られることが多いが、本書は日常生活や旅行の間でふと考えた数学的思考をベースにしており、「こう考えればうまくいく」ヒントがやさしく語られている。数学的思考は論理的思考にも通じ、ロジカルシンキングの教条的な本には付いていけない人も、この本なら理解できるだろう。この本の内容自体、知的冒険ではあるが、そういう世界を探検する意欲をかき立てる本でもある。

こういうスタイルの数学書が作れるのだなぁ、と感動しました。身近なところから、数学の考え方を解説しているのですが、著者のいろいろな体験が重なり、普通の数学解説書とは趣が異なります。本書では小学生との数学体験の例もありますので、幅広い年齢の人が楽しめると思います。本書がノンフィクション分野の賞にノミネートされた意味がわかった。訳はいまいちだったり、訳注がわずらわしいのですが、没頭します。同じような本としては、『超現実数』が思いつきました。この本に続けて、こちらもお勧めです。
