「インドの民主主義が生き残ってこられた最大の理由は、ここがあまりに多様性のある国だからだ。民主主義を危険にさらすどころか、多様性のあるインド社会は、民主主義を不可欠なものにした」。

訳者あとがきも入れると、全部で477ページある。しかし、読み終えて、これだけのページ数を費やして、やっとインド入門といえる内容に達するのだな、ということが理解できた。18の公用語、連立政権に参加している政党数だけで25、世界最大になることが確実視されている人口、憲法で自由な裁量を行うことが大幅に認められている多様な宗教、絶対に首にならないことが保障されている公務員。本当に、摩訶不思議な国である。

著者は、インドに５年住み、結婚し、ソニア・ガンジーなど多くの著名人や政治家や一般の人たちと合い、パキスタンのムバラク大統領にもインタビューしている。細部まで切り込み、分析し、広い国土のあちこちを取材し、怒り、嘆き、感動し、様々な角度からこの国を紹介している。

IT産業の活況、ムスリムとヒンドゥー、カースト、汚職、貧困、核、長い歴史、誇り、大国意識、低い識字率、持参金、文化、司法、テロ、資源、暴動、極端な男女比、カシミール問題、政治、地域格差、ボリウッド映画、貧弱なインフラ、アメリカ、民主主義、女性の地位、外交、非効率、連立政権、ガンジー、ネルー、中国、食料と水の確保、衛生問題、警察、人口増加、パキスタン、環境問題。

インドにあまり馴染みのない多くの日本人にとっては、あちこちに書かれてある中国との比較が理解の手助けになるだろう。国際的な力関係や利害関係についても目が行き届いており、よくまとまっている。インドは、世界的には中国と並んで世界からもっとも注目されている国であるにも関わらず、日本では中国に比べてその実態が知られておらず、関心もそれほど高くないように思える。多様な視点から良質なレポートをおこなっている本書は、日本人がインドを知る上でも、貴重なガイドとなるだろう。

ＦＴの支局長としてインドに滞在し、インド人と結婚した英国人でクリントン政権の財務長官だった著者。
ムンバイのテロ発生時にも問題の背景は良く理解できた。ＴＶに急遽引っぱり出された、いわゆるインド学者のしどろもどろのコメントより有効。
