　石油問題は素人からは分かりにくいことが多い。例えば、これほど価格が高くなっているのになぜ新規油田開発が活発化しないのか、最近は株価と石油価格が連動するように見えるが何故か、そもそも石油は後１０年ぐらいでなくなるという説があるが本当かなどなど。
　本書は、これらの疑問に答えつつ、現在の石油市場が、投機マネーあるいは投資マネーというかつてとは全く異なる力により動かされていることを、客観的に、かつ分かりやすく証明している。
　外国人が書いた石油の本が結構出回っているが、新聞記者出身で、石油公団勤務の長い、プロの著者が書いた本書は、最近のこの分野の本としては最高と思える。

原油の金融商品化と投機マネーについては「商品の説明」のとおりであるし、いくつかの石油問題の本でも書かれている通りであろう。

政府系石油業界のプロとして、いつかは来る石油減耗対策として：石油は輸送燃料と石油製品材料として優先的に使用し、オイルサンド・オイルシェール・GTL・CTLなどで液体燃料を輸送用等に延命し、発電・産業用には天然ガス・原子力等を使い、再生可能エネルギーの技術開発を進め、プラグインハイブリッドカーなどを普及させる、という実行可能な対応策が明示されえいる点が、ピークオイルの悲観論に対して安心感を与えてくれる。評論・分析を超えて石油・環境問題への行動指針が書かれているともいえる。

石油価格の高騰の原因は、＜レバッレジ＞の一言につきる。

アメリカのローカルな価格指標「WTI」に投機資金が入ると
そこに年金資金が注ぎ込まれるようになり
かつての１００倍ものマネーが動くようになった。
今度はその指標を元に世界中の原油価格が上るようになった。
そしてそれは天然ガスなどの価格上昇をも招いた。
即ち、最初の投機資金に
数万、数十万倍のレバレッジがかかり
そこにピークオイルや資源ナショナリズム、
中国パニックや戦争までが
次々と乗っかり
世界中の資源価格が跳ね上げられているという構図だ。

皆が賭けている所に賭ける
そして長い長いバンドワゴンの行列を作る
そこに合理的に解釈できる価格など無い
…しかしそれは投機としてはきっと正しい。

９８年にLTCMが破綻した時、
使っていたレバレッジは５０倍だったという。
今のリスクは
その時と比べてどれくらいになっているだろう。。。

この本にはそんな石油価格高騰のメカニズムや
それによって起きている「２１世紀型石油危機」の
その先にある、より大きな危機
…デタラメな価格の影響による産業としての衰退
そしてそれらとは一線を画した
よりリアルなエネルギーのあり方までが
幅広く書かれており
たいへん参考になるものだった。
