4.0 out of 5 stars 内容は素晴らしいけど書誌を省いたのは残念。, 2007/9/16
この本の原書は、フィッシャー・ブラック自身の徹底的なやりくちを手本にしたような包括的なビブリオグラフィーも含めて高く評価されているようです。ですが紙幅の関係からこの訳書においては省かれている。なので調べものをする気になった人は結局原書も買う必要があります(私はこれから買うところ)。
さりげなくちりばめられているブラック自身の言葉の中でも印象的なものの多くは、彼が死を目前にして研究生活を回顧した『一般均衡の探究』(Exploring General Equilibrium, The MIT Press, 1995)の実質1ページ程度の序文からの引用です(読むと驚くと思います。なお今野浩氏の序文に「論文集」と紹介されてますがこの本はそういうものではありません。邦訳でも(前後関係を微妙にごまかしているのでおそらく原文が元凶)微妙なのですが死の直前に編まれた顕彰論文集 Legacy of Fischer Black, Oxford University Press, 1994 と混同している気がします)。
『一般均衡の探究』が師である哲学者クワインの『哲学事典』(ちくま学芸文庫)のスタイルに影響を受けていること、オプション価格公式の根底にある確率過程論についてもウィーナーの研究に高校時代に親しんでいたこと、など、経済学、金融学以外の分野からの思想的影響についても非常に周到かつ啓発的なヒントが示され、著者自身の幅広い教養に感服します。

ブラックが何をどう考えていたのがよく分かる本。ただし訳本のタイトルに金融工学者とあるのはひどい（原著のタイトルにはない）。この本を読めばブラックの業績が金融工学にとどまらないことはよく分かるはずなのに。天国のブラックさんが怒っていないか心配です。

日本語のタイトルから、単純にいろいろなエピソードが満載の普通の伝記かなと思いました。原著者が現役の経済学者なので、気軽に読める本ではありませんでした。教科書の副読本に使えるのではないでしょうか。数学的な議論、経済学の標準的な知識がないと十分に理解できません。また、人物名がカタカナになっているので、原著論文を探すのが面倒ですし、文献一覧表が抜けているような気がします。
ブラックという人が、CAPMを主な道具として、他の人が思いも付かない解決方法で経済学を再構築しようとした孤高の探求者であることが描かれています。もちろん、生い立ちや学生時代や就職、研究者としての生活と家庭の問題など、一人の人間としての側面も描かれています。
