ビジネスマンが「トレードオフ」の考え方をベンチマークとして身につけるだけでなく、ふつうの学生（含高校生）が経済学を勉強していこうとするときのクイックガイドとしても便利な本。

まず、この本がよくできているのは、高1程度の数学で、きちんとモデルにのっとった丁寧な解説を与えていること。その数学さえも公式集が付いている。用語や式の解釈は大雑把なところもあるが、初学者がさらっと手っ取り早く読むためにはほどよい。

さらに、利子率の決定、情報の非対称性（モラルハザード・逆淘汰）や動学的な状況での考え方など、既存の初学者向けミクロ経済学の教科書よりも広い内容で、マイクロで考えうる領域を総覧してくれている。利子率のモデルは（ケインズ以前からの）まっとうな新古典派の考えに沿っており、動学的最適化はマクロ経済学の基礎付けに欠かせない議論であるから、先端というのは大げさでも、現在の経済学の流れに乗るための道筋を指し示していると言えよう。

ただ難をいえば、公式に依拠して微分を排そうとしたために、もっとも典型的な「トレードオフ」である限界原理（限界費用と限界便益の均等）に基づいて解釈しづらくなり、後のほうでモデルが複雑になったときに数式の意味づけをしていないところ。とはいえどもそれはラグランジュ乗数法さえも使わないこの本には高望みだろうし、それもおそらく気にはならないくらい筆が軽く流し読みできる。

執筆方針を明記していることは良いし、とっつきやすいのも良い。数学の使用を適度に抑えて考え方を強調しようという執筆方針も、成功しているかどうかは別として、良いと思う。だけど、評者が受けた印象は残念ながら以下のものでした。
・「数学や経済を知らなくても理解できる教科書」ではなくて「数学を知らなくても書ける本」
・「平易に説明した本」ではなくて「『信じろ』という立場から書いた本」

数式よりも考え方やモデルが本質だというのは全面的に同意できるし、確かに広範囲をとっつきやすく説明している。だけど、価格が一意に決まるように関数の形を強引に決めておきながらそれが現実の経済において一般的な状況であるかのように説明するなどの安易な記述が散見されるなど、力を入れて書いたという印象を受けない。ちなみに参考文献リストはたった三冊(全て日本語で書かれた教科書,出版年の表記無し)．もちろん索引はなし．数式周辺のインデントはムチャクチャ(出版社の手抜きか？)。

短時間で軽く読みたい人には良いだろう。だが、きちんと勉強する気がある人には数学の知識の有無によらず薦めない。
