テーラーシステム以来、アメリカでは盛んに組織設計についての研究がされており、シティーバンクの様に、競争優位性に役立てている。一方、日本では組織設計に携わるコンサルタントは皆無に等しく、この分野はアメリカより学ぶしかない。著者は、組織設計における世界的権威であり、本書が日本の経営者に与える影響は大きいのではないか？惜しむらくは、「フロント・バック型組織」といった、紹介されている組織構造は、ソニーや松下といったグローバルに展開する巨大企業向けであり、従業員１００名程度の零細企業にはあまり役に立たないということである。しかし、今までのピラミッド型組織から機能別、事業部別と展開してきた企業にとっては、示唆に富んだ一冊であろう。

組織設計について体系的に整理された書籍が少ない中で、従来からある機能別組織／事業別組織等の組織形態にとどまらず、組織の役割・影響の考察をもとに戦略を実現するための様々な組織のあり方を提示している。
バーチャル組織の構築や、（長期的な視点での）継続的なデザイン・プロセスの構築にも触れており、組織設計を考える上では新しい視点が得られる一冊である。
