　大学院入試英語問題に対応した頻出重要単語を抽出するために、独自の英語文例データベース（院単コーパス）を作成。出題傾向と英文のレベルに配慮しながらデータを収集、最終的には、文例数約8万、語数約171万語というデータベースを構築しました。
　この院単コーパスに収録したテキストは、「大学院入試問題の過去問題（人文学系統を中心）」「英米の大学で用いられている入門・初級レベルの教科書（哲学、歴史、社会学、心理学、文化人類学、美術史、国際政治経済、文学理論等）」「自然科学分野の啓蒙書、同様の内容のウェブサイト」「アメリカの歴史・経済および文化史の解説」「学術書の書評」「啓蒙的内容の雑誌記事」になります。
　このコーパスから抽出した単語の頻出度は、当然一般的な英語における頻出度とは大きく異なり、大学院入試に即した頻出度になっています。本書では、3000位までの、中学・高校レベルの単語を除き、その後に続く大学院入試レベルの頻出単語1500語と必須単語300語の計1800語を例文とともに紹介しています。

この単語集の魅力は、学術書、論文を読むのに不可欠な単語が、コンパクトにまとめられている点にある。大学に入って、論文を読み始めると、受験の際に覚えた単語が上手く機能しなくて、かなり苦戦する。本書に示してあるとおり、学術論文と一般英語の間には、語彙の隔たりがあるのだ。無論、TOEFL対策の単語集でも同レベルの語彙が習得可能であろうが、そうした類の単語集と本書の違いは、最初に記したように、コンパクトさにある。とてもじゃないが、TOEFL対策の単語集は、短期にマスターできるものではない。一方本書は、コーパスを活用して、単語を厳選しており、短期間で、かなりの程度マスター可能な構成になっている。大学に入って、初めに手に取る単語集として、私は本書をぜひお勧めしたい。ただ、CDが付いてないのが、非常に惜しい。

大学院入試の為に作られた英単語帳なので、本書掲載の単語を覚えることが、
最も要領のよい英単語対策であろう。

ただし、最難関の大学院では英単語の数は青天井、つまり、どれだけ対策しても知らない単語は必ず出てくる(しかも多数)ので、
文脈から意味を特定できるだけの力が必須となる。
そのような力が既に備わっている人は、本書の単語＋受験する大学院の英文の傾向を頭に入れておけば、大学院入試の英単語対策は問題ないであろう。

著者は早稲田大学の人気講師。その人柄の良さと分かりやすさには定評がある。
本書で特筆すべき点は、まず、厳選されている単語が、どれも実用的である点だ。
私も、大学入学当時は、単語力の無さから、学術論文の読解は苦手にしていた。
しかし、本著の単語を、数ヶ月間でマスターしたことにより、大きな自信がついた。
大学に入ってから、大学受験レベルの英語と、TOEFLなどで頻出する英単語には大きな隔たりがあることに気づいた人も多いと思う。
単語力に不安を抱える英語学習者にとって、最良の単語集である。大学院進学を考えている人だけでなく、純粋に使える単語力を向上させたいと考える人にとってもオススメの一冊といえよう。
