留学、旅行、赴任など、海外へ行く前にこの本を是非一読
することをおすすめしたい。
英語学習の点から言えば、幅広い語彙が身につくうえ、
「説明の仕方」の型が提供されるので、この本を土台に
いろんなことを説明するという応用力が期待できる。
また、現地へ行ってしばらくしてから日本文化の素晴らしさに
気付く、というパターンは良く聞く話だ。
でも、渡航前にそれを認識し、そうすることによってこそ、
現地の文化の素晴らしさにも気付き、それを学びとすることが
出来るのではないかと思う。この本は、その手助けとなること
間違いなしではないだろうか。

旧版のレヴューにも書いたが、競争の激しい語学書にしては珍しいロングセラー。今では大手出版社が量産するようになってしまったバイリンガルブックの元祖。内容も丁寧で信頼されており、今回の改訂新版は、都内大型書店では平積みまたは面出しディスプレイされている。対象とする読者だが、大学教養課程の学生程度であろうか、テキストや参考書に最適（網羅的、主義主張の偏りなし、コンパクトで持ち運び便利、適度な色使い、読みやすく使いやすい日英語のレイアウト、リーズナブルな価格）。語学教育と比較文化教育との融合が期待できる（歌舞伎とは何か、英語で説明せよ、といった問題設定）。また、日本に来た外国人留学生には、日本語学習と共に、地理や歴史を含めたトータルな日本理解に役立つだろう。忙しい社会人も、外国人に接する機会の多い人は持っていて損にならないだろう。著者の杉浦氏は一流の編集者で、月刊「翻訳の世界」編集長として、翻訳家の必読書として知られる「翻訳英文法」を生み出した（この本も20年以上のロングセラー）。

幽玄、わび・さび、無常。このような「日本の精神」は日本語で説明するのも難しいのではないでしょうか。本書は、このような日本人にとっても容易ではない言葉の定義に始まり、誰しもが「日本」と認識する、芸者、能、忍術、鍋料理、ふすま、パチンコといった言葉の定義にいたるまでを英語と日本語の両言語で丁寧に解説されています。その数実に３５０以上。

以下のような人は必読！
日本文化に少しでも興味があり、再確認したい方。海外に行かれる方。外国人の知人のいる方。
見事な英訳はいわんや、日本語のみを読むような読み方でも十二分に楽しめます。外国人へのちょっとインテリでステキなプレゼントにもなりますよ。
