　タイトルから想像して、ギャグをからめたサクセスストーリーとしてのカラスヤ版「まんが道」なのだろうと思い本書を手にとった。

　ところが、ギャグはところどころあるものの、上京によるとまどい、ひとり暮らしの孤独、漫画家という職業による将来の不安、などの描写と話の途中にはさまれる東京の風景スケッチとあいまって、まるでつげ義春の作品でも読んでいるような辛気くさい雰囲気にとまどった。
　しかし、本書の後半にある「出来事」（これはあなたが読んで確かめていただきたい）を読んでその理由がわかった。
　この本は、ひとりの男の上京物語であるだけでなく、人生の物語でもあるのだ。

　「明日には忘れてしまうような事を　話したりできる相手がいれば　人生が　楽しくなると思ったら　大まちがい　んなことは関係なく　いかなる時も　人生は　楽しまなくてはなるぬ」（本書94頁）
　カラスヤサトシの人生哲学（と言ってはおおげさか）が表れた、いい言葉だと私は思う。

自分も似たようなところがあるので、とても感情移入して読んだ。
作者が大阪から東京に上京してきたときの自伝だが、
きらびやかな成功物語でも悲惨な失敗物語でもなく、
日常のささいなことを、美化せず、誇張せず、ありのままに描いている。
でも、なんだか静かに心に残る作品だった。
決して大笑いではないけれども、ギャグ作家だけあって、
小さなところでクスクス笑える。
どれもすごくバカらしいけど、愛おしくなるような笑い。
家族にまつわるエピソードではジーンときたり、
カエルの美声（？）に聞き入るシュールでセンチなシーンもあったり、
とにかく一過性ではない、読み応えを感じた。

章ごとに見開きで挿入される
東京の風景（井之頭池、上野パンダ像、田無タワーなど）は、
物哀しくてなんだか映画のワンシーンみたい。
