　月の光に照らされた庭園で、ほんのりとかぐわしい草花の香りに包まれたみたいな、ふっと心が安らぐ英国産ファンタジー短篇集。イングランドのサセックス州に生まれたジョーン・エイキン（1924-2004）が、自分の70歳の誕生日を記念して、お気に入りの短篇を15品、選び取ったもの。
　英国ヴィクトリア朝の雰囲気のするふわりとした肌触りの話。奇想天外、そこではとんでもないことが当たり前のように起こるアーミテージ家の話。「gone、gone」という鐘の音を響かせながら、そっと、ひそやかに消えていく話。それぞれの話の中に息づいている、小粒だけれど味わい深いファンタジーの魔法の香りに、心地よく酔うことができました。
　15の話の中で、格別、心に響いた作品。「魚の骨のハープ」「十字軍騎士のトビー」「神さまの手紙をぬすんだ男」の三つの作品。「魚の骨のハープ」は、ハープからこぼれる美しい音楽が、凍りついた冬をいのち目覚める春へと変えるところ。「十字軍騎士のトビー」は、海を背景に、姿の見えない魂の触れ合いが生き生きと描き出されていたところ。「神さまの手紙をぬすんだ男」は、主人公の郵便配達人に贈られた作者からのプレゼントが、ほっこりとあたたかで、気が効いていたところ。それぞれの話に、不思議に香りのよい花がひとつ、咲いているみたいな。魔法の庭の草花が、ひそやかに風に揺れているみたいな。ここには素敵な魔法が働いているなあと、しみじみと胸に迫るものを感じました。
　このほか、「ゆり木馬」「シリアル・ガーデン」「三つ目の願い」「からしつぼの中の月光」「キンバルス・グリーン」「ナッティ夫人の暖炉」「望んだものすべて」「ホーティングさんの遺産」「真夜中のバラ」「ネコ用ドアとアップルパイ」「お城の人々」「本を朗読する少年」の話を収めた一冊。

子供の頃に読んで、なぜかずっと憶えていて、大人になってふともう一度読み返したい！と思うようなのが本書に収められた話だと思う。派手さはないが、後からじわじわ心にくる。疲れた時や、つらい事があった日に読むと、ぽろっと涙が出てしまうかもしれない。作者は詩人コンラッド・エイキンの娘で、イギリス屈指の女流作家ジョーン・エイキン。つかの間現実を忘れさせてくれたり、心を慰めてくれる魔法がこの本にはあるような気がする。昨今のファンタジーブームとは一線を画する「本物」の匂いがした。「シリアル・ガーデン」という話と「からしつぼの中の月光」という話がとても心に残った。
